Dinosaurs had feathers ruffled by parasites, study finds | The Guardian
Scientists have discovered ancient pieces of amber, dating from about 99m years ago, that contain dinosaur feathers riddled with louse-like insects. One of the feathers even shows signs of having been nibbled.
The team said it is the first time feather-eating insects have been discovered from that era – despite many non-avian dinosaurs and early birds having been identified as having plumage.
“This is the earliest recorded, or formally documented, [instance of] lice or louse-like insects feeding on feathers,” said Dr Chungkun Shih, a visiting professor at Capital Normal University in China and co-author of the research.
The discovery pushes back the origin of feather-munching insects by about 55m years. They were not the only parasites that might have troubled dinosaurs; previous research has shown that the beasts also endured blood-sucking ticks.
Writing in the journal Nature Communications, Shih and colleagues revealed how they found 10 tiny louse-like insects alongside two dinosaur feathers inside Burmese amber believed to date from about 99m years ago – or possibly earlier.
The team said the insects belonged to a previously unknown species, dubbed Mesophthirus engeli, and were nymphs – an immature stage of insect development. Among their features, the insects had tiny wingless bodies, of 0.14mm–0.23mm in length, strong chewing mouth parts with at least four teeth, and short, sturdy antennae. The team estimate that the insects would have reached about 0.5mm in length in their adult phase.
Shih said the size of the insects was a surprise, since fleas from the era were much larger than their modern counterparts. “Based on our studies of fossil fleas, we thought that if we were looking for lice, the size may be bigger than today’s lice, but [they] turned out to be very small,” he said. “That can explain why on compression fossils [in rocks] we cannot find any lice.”
Even within ancient amber, the insects are rare. Shih said the team looked at up to 1,000 pieces containing preserved bird or dinosaur feathers before making their discovery.

Inland fisheries are the main source of protein and vital nutrients for many communities. However, these fisheries have several challenges, such as ectoparasites, and their detrimental effect on the food security and financial stability of those who depend on them. Ectoparasite infestations significantly negatively affect the profitability and standard of living of fish farmers since they can lower fish yields and quality overall. In the Bontanaga and Golinga reservoirs in northern Ghana, ectoparasite infestations of O. niloticus (Nile tilapia) and C. gariepinus (African catfish) were investigated for prevalence and variation. The study emphasizes how ectoparasites affect fish health, influencing regional economy and food security. The study discovered that the infestation rates of the different species and reservoirs varied. In general, the infestation rates of C. gariepinus were greater in Bontanga and Golinga, at 76% and 48.9%, respectively, than in O. niloticus, at 61.5% and 38.4%. The temperature and dissolved oxygen levels in Bontanga reservoir (28.50C and 6.8 mg/l) and Golinga reservoir (26.30C and 5.4 mg/l) were found to be statistically different at p < 0.05. In both reservoirs, there was a significant association (p < 0.05) between the ectoparasite prevalence and the water quality indicators. Seasons and water quality characteristics differed in the incidence of ectoparasites, highlighting the necessity for efficient management techniques to lessen these parasitic risks.

The freshwater garfish, Xenentodon cancila (Hamilton, 1822), is a needlefish species found in freshwater and brackish areas in South and Southeast Asia. This fish is a regular aquarium favourite. While these fish are linked to the marine needlefish known as gar or garpike in Europe, they are far more distantly connected to other fishes known as gars. For the first time, Trichodina cancilae Asmat, 2001 was discovered parasitizing the gills of a freshwater fish known as Kokila in Assam, India (X. cancila Hamilton, 1822). T. cancilae morphology and morphometrics are discussed here, along with a comparison of the same species found in West Bengal and Bangladesh. This Trichodina species lies within the morphometric range and shares the original population's overall look of the sticky disc.

The crab louse is usually found in pubic hair. Although sexual contact is the usual mode of spread (and therefore when found on the eyelashes of children, sexual exposure or abuse may need to be considered) , non-sexual transmission may occur among families and people living closely together and sharing personal items.
