In celebration of All Hallows' Eve, I give you one of my favorite homes in the city, 3972 2nd Avenue. Built in 1879, it is described as High Victorian Eclectic in design, complete with a witch hat tower. #Detroit #CassCorridor #MidtownDetroit #HighVictorianEclectic #VictorianArchitecture #EclecticArchitecture #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #casasecasarios #houses_ofthe_world #beautifulhouseoldandnew #TheAmericanHome #houseportrait #BrickStory #RawDetroit #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #MotorCityShooters #PureDetroit313 #DepictTheD #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #ThisPlaceMatters #ThisPlaceMattersDetroit #MichiganPlacesMatter #HappyHalloween (at Cass Corridor) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4QiFSElEnk/?igshid=1du2hap9wfw9f
Marvin M. Stanton House (Also known as “The Castle”) Address: 112/530 Parkview Built: 1898 Architect: Louis Kamper Marvin M. Stanton was born in Otsego County, New York in 1850. He relocated to Michigan with his family in 1857. After graduating from Alfred University, Mr. Stanton moved to Detroit in 1867. He soon established a business manufacturing and selling mens clothing and furnishings. As Detroit grew more prosperous, so did Stanton. Stanton became a leading citizen in the city and very much engaged in civic affairs. Under Mayor William Cotter Maybury, he held the position of police commissioner. He was also public lighting commissioner. For his new residence, located near the Detroit River, Stanton commissioned the prolific Louis Kamper. The result is a miniature castle design featuring an assortment of towers, turrets, crenellations and gables. The use of red brick and cream-colored stone make for an attractive facade. The 13,500-square-foot mansion boasts 12 rooms, 7.5 bedrooms, 7 fireplaces, Pewabic tile and a winding oak staircase. In the rear of the home is a canal known as the Stanton Canal. Marvin Stanton lived here until his death in 1908. His family continued to occupy the home for several years. The latter decades of the 20th century saw the Stanton home vacant. It recently served as a bed and breakfast as well as a restaurant before being vacated again. The home has been undergoing renovation for several years. #Detroit #Eastside #JosephBerrySubdivision #EclecticArchitecture #MedievalArchitecture #VictorianArchitecture #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #casasecasarios #houses_ofthe_world #beautifulhouseoldandnew #TheAmericanHome #houseportrait #BrickStory #RawDetroit #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #MotorCityShooters #PureDetroit313 #DepictTheD #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #ThisPlaceMatters #ThisPlaceMattersDetroit #MichiganPlacesMatter (at Joseph Barry Subdivision, Detroit) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3PnLr8lLTU/?igshid=ozwn3j7ls6lz
The definite highlight of the Ypsi trip from last year was stumbling upon this incredible mansion (thanks to @chrisbdom) located at 600 (formerly 616) North River Street. Constructed from 1902 to 1904, it was the home of Shelley Byron Hutchinson (1864 - 1961), the H in S&H Green Stamps, a trading stamp business co-founded with Thomas A. Sperry (1964 - 1913) in 1896. For generations, S&H Green Stamps was a household name in the United States, available in retailers of every kind and redeemable for a wide range of products via the S&H Catalog. This made Sperry & Hutchinson very wealthy men and allowed Mr. Hutchinson to build this "house on a hill". The 30-room Hutchinson House is a combination of Queen Anne, Tudor Revival and Craftsman styles. The story surrounding Mr. Hutchinson's personal life is the stuff tabloid dreams are made of and is readily available online. Unfortunately, it is too lengthy to go into detail about, even for me, which says a lot. Since 1975, the home has been the headquarters of HighScope, an educational research foundation. #Ypsilanti #Ypsi #Eastside #QueenAnne #TudorRevival #CraftsmanStyle #VictorianArchitecture #ArtsandCraftsArchirecture #EclecticArchitecture #HalfTimbered #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #casasecasarios #houses_ofthe_world #beautifulhouseoldandnew #TheAmericanHome #houseportrait #BrickStory #YpsiReal #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #ThisPlaceMatters #MichiganPlacesMatter (at HighScope) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwXGb0HAJuw/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=mtfzvmm1ck7g
Despite my best efforts, I wasn't able to find any substantial history on this expansive Second Empire/Gothic Revival abode in Northville. Another West Village masterpiece on Seyburn, this one a mix of Colonial Revival and medieval elements. A man's home should be his castle, after all. #Detroit #Eastside #WestVillageDetroit #ColonialRevival #MedievalArchitecture #EclecticArchitecture #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #casasecasarios #houses_ofthe_world #beautifulhouseoldandnew #RawDetroit #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #MotorCityShooters #PureDetroit #PureDetroit313 #DepictTheD #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #TheMidwestival #IGersDetroit #IGersMidwest #detroit_igers #ThisPlaceMatters #ThisPlaceMattersDetroit #MichiganPlacesMatter #TheAmericanHome (at West Village, Detroit)
