“Ed Was Here” 35x25” Photography Archival Fuji Photo Paper On display at College for Creative Studies Taubman Center. This “tag” as they’re called in graffiti land, was inside one of the walls at Joe Louis Arena (1979 – 2017), former home of the Detroit Red Wings and site of numerous concerts and other events. I first noticed the tag while riding the People Mover to run an errand and was caught off-guard, leading me to stay on through another circuit in order to confirm what I thought I’d seen. Really, the list goes on and on, and I wish everything I just listed was hypothetical. In truth, all those things actually happened to people I know or knew. Most of the women I know out here have varying degrees of PTSD and for good reason, which is why I always try to have a few pepper sprays on me to hand out. It won’t stop a bullet, but it does give them some level of security when they have it. So I made these stickers and I’m going to sell them for $5 each. For every two I sell I can buy a pepper spray. When you think of syringe programs you think of harm reduction, but it’s actually a lot more than that. It’s about connection between us and the people we see on outreach. “Rebuilding a City” Back when Detroit was going through her bankruptcy I used to ride past where the “Z” now stands every day on my way home from work (via the Detroit People Mover). In those days I was usually the only one riding. The first day I saw the construction start, I was stricken with panic that the buildings (that now make up The Belt) would be torn down. They weren’t anything majestic, but they had some beautiful architectural details. Although a long-time fan of Dan Gilbert’s, I had underestimated him and his plans for this largely over-looked block. He took this space and not only built on it, he made it one of Detroit’s most iconic and photographed FROM spaces. The rooftop is a prime spot to get some great city views, but the changing murals in The Belt make for a wonderful photo session themselves.
