James Burgess Book, Jr. House Address: 1815/8469 E. Jefferson Built: 1911 Architect: Louis Kamper James Burgess Book, Jr. was (1890-1963) was the eldest of 3 sons born to James Burgess Book and Clotilde Palms. His father was one of Detroit's top surgeons and real estate developer while his mother was the daughter of Francis Palms, Michigan's largest land owner at one time. After attending the Detroit University, he traveled extensively throughout Europe, studying the architectural landscape. Upon returning, he halted his educational pursuits to assist his father in his vast real estate holdings. After Book, Sr. died in 1916, his 3 sons, James B. Jr., Francis P. and Herbert V., became trustees of his estate. Mr. Book commissioned the always prolific Louis Kamper to design his new residence at the northwest corner of East Jefferson and Burns. This would be the beginning of a fruitful relationship. The home was inspired by the Petit Trianon on the grounds of the Palace of Versailles. The Petit Trianon was commissioned by Louis XV for his mistress, Madame de Pompadour, who died four years before its completion. It was occupied by her successor, Madame du Barry. During his ascension to the throne in 1774, Louis XVI presented the chΓ’teau and its surroundings to his 19-year-old queen, Marie Antoinette. The Book home was purchased by ad agency Brooke, Smith, French & Dorrance in 1945. In recent years, the property was known as Historic Book Place and occupied by various businesses. In 2010, the home was approved for $300,000 in Brownfield tax credits towards restoration as a mixed-used property. In 2012, demolition began on a non-historic portion of the property. The Book mansion is, after much delay, under renovation. #Detroit #Eastside #IndianVillage #FrenchNeoclassical #LouisKamper #EastJefferson #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #RestorationSaturday #casasecasarios #beautifulhouseoldandnew #houses_ofthe_world #RawDetroit #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #MotorCityShooters #PureDetroit #PureDetroit313 #DepictTheD #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #IGersDetroit #IGersMidwest #detroit_igers #ThisPlaceMatters #ThisPlaceMattersDetroit #MichiganPlacesMatter (at Indian Village, Detroit)
