Riku was about to doze off, the TV humming the credits to a movie while advertizing the next one, when his phone buzzed on the coffee table. “Shit!” he hissed, jumping up and jolting Sora asleep on his shoulder.
“Wha? Huh?” Sora yelped. “What happened?” He yawned wide. “Did...Troy win the basketball game?”
“Yeah, yeah,” Riku muttered. Adrenaline made his hands shake as he picked up his phone, “KAIRI” flashing on the screen. “C’mon, you’ve seen High School Musical a billion times.”
“I know,” he said, settling back into his side. “Whossat?”
“Okay.” Sora slipped and his head fell onto his lap, but he didn’t seem to mind, hugging his thighs. “Tell her...I said hi...”
He smirked. “Sure.” He’s cute. At last, he swiped the call open and held it to his ear. “Yo.”
“Hey. Am I calling too late?”
“Nah. You might’ve woke up Sora during our High School Musical marathon. He says hi, though.”
She giggled. “Woke him up? Sounds like I woke you up, too.”
“No...” His protest was weak as he struggled to choke back a yawn. “Movie’s over anyway.”
“Yeah. They’re rerunning it too, so...”
“Watching it on TV, huh?”
Silence fell between them. On his lap, Sora had begun to snore, and Riku stroked his spiky hair gently. “Sorry, I don’t think I can...do anything tonight,” he said.
“That’s okay.” Her voice lilted as she spoke, playful, and knowing. Shit. Riku held his breath and bit his lip. Sora’s usually home by now. She calls late so we can...fool around. Sometimes we Skype, sometimes it’s just over the phone. Sora’s not into it, so...
With a sigh, she came back. “We can play some other time.”
Riku swallowed. “Yeah. Some other time.”
“Are you feeling all right?”
“What? Yeah, I’m fine.” Why do you ask? I spent the whole night with Sora, of course...I’m doing fine.
“I just wanted to...check in. You know? I-I...” Kairi hesitated. “I worry.”
Riku’s face fell. Worry, huh? Worry. After I got in trouble at school, blew up at Sora, shut myself away from everyone, and really wanted to end...well, everything. Guess that’s a reason to be worried. But, you both stuck around, you both came back for me.
You were crying, Kairi...I don’t want to see you cry again.
In the end, Riku nodded. “Yeah, I know. I’m okay, now.”
“Good.” It was warm, and pushed a smile on his face. “I’ll let you boys get some sleep.”
He chuckled. “Yeah. Gotta drag Sunshine into bed, here. Oy--” He mussed Sora’s hair, coaxing him to groan. “Let’s get into bed. You can’t use me as a pillow forever.”
“But whyyyyy,” Sora groaned.
On the phone, Kairi giggled. “Okay. Night, Riku. Love you.”
Riku’s heart stuttered. Has she ever said that to me? “L-love you, too,” he replied. That’s the first time we...ah. Gods. And it was so casual, too...
He closed his mouth abruptly when he saw Sora’s face rolled over in his lap, grinning. “Riku loves Kaiiiriii,” he sang.
“Hey--!” Riku snapped, tossing the phone on the couch and immediately diving his hands onto Sora’s stomach. “That’s enough out of you...!” Still, he could feel his face burning as the air became punctuated with Sora’s giggles. Love you. Love you. Love you.
