In the warm glasshouse of Myddleton House, London, the beautifully trained climber Aristolochia grandiflora (pelican flower, Dutchman’s pipe) was flowering. These dramatic blooms have evolved to be pollinated by flies attracted by a foul smell, similar to that of rotting meat. Each trumpet-shaped flower lasts for two days. On the first day it is in the female phase, with the flies trapped by downward facing hairs in the pouch of the flower to ensure pollination. On the next day, the flower changes to male phase and pollen is deposited on the pollinators, the odour disappears, the hairs wither and the insects are released to visit the next flower.

From pipe dream to pipe reality! . California Pipevine (Dutchman’s Pipe) planted late last year busting out the blooms! Instead of smelling sweet / looking pretty to attract bees or hummingbirds, the flowers fart out a funk that’s fabulous to fungus gnats & carrion-feeding insects, who crawl inside, party, get drunk, & then crawl out disorientated & on to the next flower. . California Pipevine Blossom in the Pipe! 🤗 . Planted last fall, my three little CA Pipevines from @oaktownnursery have put on new growth, new fuzz, & now a new flower in the making! 🥳 . Even better: gophers have left these plants alone ✊🏼 Perhaps the toxins in the plant that help protect it from all predators except the fungus gnats that pollinate it & caterpillars of the swallowtail butterfly are keeping the gophers away 🤔 .
