What to Expect from TMS?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, also known as TMS, is an evidence-based interventional treatment modality approved by the FDA. Additionally, these treatments do not require anesthesia or recovery time, allowing them to be easily incorporated into an individual’s routine.
There are different types of TMS, each of which is non-invasive and involves stimulating the brain’s structures to regulate neural activity. Depending on the specific type of TMS that you include in your healthcare plan, it can help with treatment-resistant depression, anxious depression, Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and smoking cessation.
What Are the Types of TMS?
At Pasadena Neuropsychiatry, we treat patients through rTMS and dTMS procedures.
rTMS
Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, more frequently called rTMS, is the original and standard form of this treatment. During the procedure, a figure-8-shaped handheld device emits electromagnetic pulses that help to regulate neural activity within the structures of the brain that are associated with depression.
This procedure is clinically shown to be safe and effective; however, this treatment option has certain limitations. Because the handheld device has a relatively narrow scope, it can only regulate one focal brain structure at any given moment. Additionally, it may not be capable of directly stimulating the brain’s deeper structures.
dTMS
This advancement on rTMS addresses these limitations and the resulting concerns. Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or dTMS, utilizes a magnetic field to regulate the neural activity of brain structures safely and effectively. This allows the procedure to help those experiencing depression and other forms of mental illness.
