The other day I freaked out over the fact that blackberries and black raspberries are classified as stone fruits. Why is something with so many seeds getting classified as something that distinctly has one larger seed.
That is, until I was forced to remember how they grow and therefore why they’re rightfully stone fruit.
They’re both aggregate fruits, meaning they are made of individual nubs, or drupelets, that all grow together and form what looks like one fruit. This is possible because the flower actually has more than one ovary that is being pollinated.
Each berry as a whole may have 25-30 seeds, but the individual drupes only have one seed, making them a stone fruit!
Some pretty wild & crazy drupes on this escaped indoor ornamental umbrella tree that's found a place in a tiny public reserve. Marrickville.

What Should We Do Now?
Ilex or holly, is a genus of 400 to 600 species of flowering plants in the family Aquifoliaceae, and the only living genus in that family. Plants in this genus have simple, alternate glossy leaves, frequently with a spiny leaf margin. The inconspicuous flower is greenish white, with four petals. They are generally dioecious, with male and female flowers on different plants. The small fruits of Ilex, although often referred to as berries, are technically drupes.
