Their Washington Heights school was, the NY Times reported, “the first all-girls’ high school in the city to provide driver education.” At the time, only 6 of New York City’s public high schools offered driver training. After the Board of Education turned down Mother Cabrini’s request for a car, citing insufficient teachers for the classes, a local auto dealer donated a new Ford so the girls could get on the road.

Woman, 70, on First Solo Drive, Bounces Onto Lawn

July 1, 1947: Martha Flickman, of 2906 Humboldt Ave. N, celebrated her fourth driving lesson with a solo trip, which was going fine until she lost control of the car just over a mile from her home. The car bounced over a curb and came to rest on the stoop of the Zembal residence at 4151 Humboldt Ave. N. But Mrs. Flickman, unhurt, was not deterred--she got out of the car and said she was ready for her fifth driving lesson.

A quarter of all accidents are cause by distraction (phones). We clearly need self driving cars, already.

April 19, 1948: the nose of a nice new Cadillac pokes through the brick wall of a garage at 1224 Thieriot Ave., the Bronx. The car and garage, both owned by Dr. Henry A. Wahn. were damaged when, neighbors say, Dr. Wahn's 17-year-old daughter, Mary Ann, was teaching herself to drive.
