More of themmmm (Level 1 vs Level 20)

I like Miraculous Ladybug, it’s a guilty pleasure. I love LB for all it’s faults and wins because the show itself has a really nice premise and semi-okay backstory for a lot of things.  And that being said, I don’t hate any of the characters designs (Except maybe a few akumas, buuuut) I just have my nitpicks with them. Some nitpicks can’t be helped since it is in 3d and so it’s more of a budget than creative thing (I’m sure with a lot of designs they had to turn down bc of the animation times and such) I’m also only a hobbyist character designer, I am in no means professional nor do I think my designs are better than the canon designs for the characters. I simply wanted to take a gander and see how people liked my own designs for the characters (Since I follow the “silhouette rule” which means you need to be able to tell a character from others by their shadow, I often exaggerate or make characters as different as I possibly can.)  With all that out of the way, here are the characters I redesigned (Loosely-ish)

Chloe, Alya, Marinette, and Kagami (Just because I wanted to redesign Dragami and so I also redesigned her civilian form. 

With Chloe I just made her look more “Preppy” in a way (Stereotyping, demonize me, it helps when designing.)  Alya I just opened up her “flannel” bc buttons are hard in the morning (I just wanted to, no other reason.  Marinette, I wanted to make her have more of a “femme fatale” sort of civivilan look about her. Plus the idea of her putting pockets in a dress is something I myself would do if I wore dresses. Also, polka dots bc everyone in this show is oblivious and no one would make the connection. (I kept her purse bc where else is she gonna hide Tikki?)  Kagami I took the most time on. I didn’t know what I wanted, I love her canon design. It looks nice, and it suits her. I just got rid of the sleeves on her jacket and buttoned it up bc it makes her look more regal in a sense and have almost an aloof sense about her that she already does. 

(I also gave Mari pretty flats that remind me somewhat of ballet shoes, which were going to be ballet shoes originally then I thought.... nah.)

Queen Bee, I tried to make look more... well, queeny. I added a skirt (Which originally had fluff at the end, but I thought that it looked a little tacky) and instead of a full suit, she has gloves and sleeveless. All which make her look befitting more for a queen. I also added the crown on her miraculous bc why not, it holds up her hair.  I also added a stripe of blue on her bc queen bees have like a blue diamond or something on them to tell they are the queen, so it works (And looks nice)

Rena Rouge I made to look a little like a Voodoo queen (hence the sleeves, almost all images on a google search yielded those sleeves) I also made the necklace look like a zipper on her too. I just tried to make her look like herself, but also separate costume wise from the rest.)

Ladybug I kept very close to canon with little decor on her suit. I just made her legs and arms black like a ladybug (Also put some red at the ends to add some more red.) She also got her spots because she wouldn’t be Ladybug without em. I also put her hair in a ponytail so that it made a little more sense as to why everyone finds it hard to notice who Ladybug is. I also made her yoyo in place of her purse bc why not. 

And finally for Dragami, she I wanted to base on a fencing outfit which is why she has the flap (Lined in gold bc she a classy lady) and the shoulder pads. I also color picked her suit color from her vest from the first ep she was in (To make it as far from Ladybugs as I could) I also used a little saying in her design. “Red and yellow kill a fellow” (So more red and yellow than black. Ladybug however follows the ‘rule’ of “Red and black venom lack.” which ties nicely into their characters too) With Dragami I also gave her “gloves” since I wanted Marinette (And the other girls) to stand apart. (Yes, Queen Bee has gloves, but they’re skintight, these come off Kagami) 

So yeah, I know they weren’t the best drawn ever but I hope you do like the designs I did. I worked hard to try and come up with designs that would suit the characters, but might even be easily 3d animated too. I just like designing/redesigning characters and doing this gives me a chance to better my own creations as a result of the criticism I get from redesigns (In a way. Like how to fit a character better.) 

Dragami: I think I’m getting better at this. I didn’t even stab her!

Hohoho! Lately I’ve been going nuts using color halftone. It’s a pretty simple process but since I’m doing colored pics, it is a bit different than with black/white HOI.

1. 

First I finish the pic. With halftone pics, I leave lots of white around.

2.

Time to apply halftones. Since this is going to be colored, I need to copy paste the pic in different document, and turn it into grayscale pic. (photoshop: image -> mode -> grayscale)

3. 

I apply the color halftone effect! (filter -> pixelate -> color halftone)

4.

I copy paste the black/white halftone pic ABOVE everything in my colored pic, set the layer “multiply” with around 25% opacity

5.

My fave part, I make an overlay layer above everything and SLAP tons of different shades with a very soft brush. Don’t be afraid with this part. I’ve slapped yellow, pink, blue, purple and green all around this pic.
