The Perrhaebi were an ancient Greek people who lived in northern Thessaly. They took part in the Trojan War under Guneus and also fought in the Battle of Thermopylae. Their capital was Phalanna, and their most significant town, or polis, was Oloosson. Through most of their history they were overshadowed and controlled by Thessaly, although they had two votes at the Delphic Amphictyony. Philip II of Macedon freed the Perrhaebi from Thessaly and took their kingdom for Macedonian control, under which it remained until Roman conquest in 196. They were listed in Xerxe's vast army by Herodotus. A coin of the Perrhaebi depicted a man restraining a bull on one side and a horse on the other. // Disclaimer: Read The Description And Watch Carefully The Images Provided. Rare Gold Drachm from Thasos, C. 380 BC
The obverse has the image Dionysos wearing an ivy-wreath and the reverse has the inscription ΘAΣION behind Herakles, who's wearing a lion’s skin headdress, kneeling and shooting an arrow, a K is inscribed on the right, all within a linear square within an incuse square. This rare coin sold at auction for around 82,500 USD.
Thasos is an island off the ancient Thracian coast in the northern Agean Sea. The island was important in wine trade and also controlled rich gold and silver mines on the mainland. It was colonized at an early date by Phoenicians who founded a temple to the god Melqart, whom the Greeks identified as “Tyrian Heracles.” The temple still existed in the time of Herodotus.
Sasanian Empire: Bahram II AR drachm, 3rd century CE.
Obv: Jugate, cuirassed busts of Bahram, wearing winged crown surmounted by globe decorated with concentric arcs, and his queen, Shapurdukhtak, wearing bonnet with boar's head, right, facing the bust of Prince Bahram III, left, who wears bonnet with eagle's head (crown of Anahit) and presents wreath. Pahlavi script legend inside beaded border.
Rev: Zoroastrian fire altar with attendants facing the altar, the left one representing the King and the right one representing Anahit presenting a wreath; Pahlavi script between each attendant and beaded border; fravahr (investiture wreath) symbol to the left of flames, taurus symbol to right of flames.
I show this cool coin as an excuse to gush a little about the little-known Queen Shapurdukhtak. Shapurdukhtak was the daughter of a Sassanian prince and a neighboring queen named Denag. She was raised in her father’s province, Meshan, and seems to have learned a fair bit about governance. When her father died in 260 CE, her mother seems to have taken control of the province, giving Shapurdukhtak a strong female role model. She grew up to marry her cousin, Bahram II, and navigated the complicated politics of the Sassanian court, even as her own brother, Hormizd, rose in rebellion in eastern Iran.
Unusually for Sassanian queens, Shapurdukhtak appears on most of her husband’s coins, along with her young son, Bahram III. She also appears in rock reliefs with her husband at Barm-e Delak. She secured her disgraced brother’s territories for her son’s sole control and, when her husband died in 293, she was alive to watch the young man take the throne. The exact date of her death is unknown, but she lived a particularly interesting and complicated life.
