That’s a fantastic question! I hadn’t actually thought deeply about it, but now that you mention it, an Obito without Kannabi bridge is an Obito without a sharingan! How fascinating it would be if Obito doesn’t awaken his sharingan at all…
But for the purposes of this AU I really want him to have it. HmMmM… I’m sure I could come up with any number of angsty situations which puts Obito in enough emotional pain to awaken it. Angst-for-power gets old, though, especially with Uchihas. Maybe with Rin’s medic expertise they manage to trigger it artificially without needing to force-feed Obito emotional pain?
