Hopper spent Christmas with Joyce and Jonathan. All three off them enjoyed it.
El spent Christmas with her friends and they pooled money to get her a walkie of her own.

The book takes place in 1977. Cannonically, Hopper has been Hawkins Chief of Police for 4 years at the start of the show (1983). Sarah's illness and his divorce would have happened between 1978 and 1980; a two year span that shattered his life.
He worked on the Hawkins police force before moving to New York, too. That, plus his record with the military, fast-tracked him to Homicide Detective in New York.
