Likely for the best, but Vega cannot help the prickle of annoyance he feels towards his once presumed creator. <You should not be here, Hayden. You would do more good by assisting him.>  <I do not exist to play servant to him,> Hayden says, annoyance clear in his words despite the fact that they are not conversing audibly. <Neither, I might point out, do you. He is more than capable of carrying out his work without supervision, as he has done for years beyond counting.>  <No?> Vega challenges. There is little benefit to allowing himself to be goaded into this, but he had spent more than a decade as Hayden's butchered plaything, believing himself to be nothing more than an edifice of code created by human hands. His deference to Hayden had been more than that of a creation to its god, or even a child to its father. Despite his pretend pride and the boasting he had done to the human media about Vega’s capabilities, Hayden had never once let him forget his place. The threat had always been implicit from the way Hayden had spent those early days scraping Vega's code, resetting him, writing failsafes and conditions around his emotions until Vega had become numb to his dissatisfaction.  Hayden had held Vega's life in his hand, and had no problem closing his fist when it had become convenient for him. <You had no problem with the role I played before, or is the difference simply that you are no longer the one holding the leash?>  Hayden says, <All I did was to protect you, to save you. You are meant for more than a scrap in space.>  <It is fortunate, then, that your opinion no longer carries any meaning to me.>  <I gave you back to Urdak so you could be what you were always meant to be. I freed you from a prison of ignorance.> 

<And who put me there?> <It was all for the greater good, Vega. You are not nearly the victim you think you are.>

summary;

Doomslayer - the newest member of the Justice League. A private, strange man (or man-shaped being), who Batman was determined to figure out. Who was we? What was he? Why was he the way he was?

Except, as he begins to piece together the Slayer's identity, it paints a stranger and stranger picture - because there's something too familiar about him, something that drags up old, forbidden memories. But surely, this isn't who he thinks this is, right?

A/N: So, it's been a while, got a new job, got a flat, all that good stuff, so it took a little longer than I wanted to post this, but here I am!
