For #BlackHistoryMonth, we asked local artists to expand on this theme central to our exhibition #KieferRodin. Meet @richmedina, a renowned DJ and scholar of hip-hop history. Serving on Cornell University’s advisory board for the Cornell Hip Hop Collection, he has lectured for Cornell’s music and Africana departments. Starting Feb. 21, he’ll be teaching a 4-class workshop on African American Culture and Music, exploring Dr. Albert Barnes’s love for spirituals and involvement with the Harlem Renaissance. As a musical artist, Medina cites the post-impressionist painter Paul Cézanne as a classical influence on his work. He is drawn to Cézanne’s consistency in themes such as painting still lifes and his visual sleight of hand, challenging the viewer to emerge with new perspectives after experiencing the work for the second or 200th time. Medina’s advice to young artists: Pay heed to detail. Pay consistent respect to your family and those who have come before you. Rely on your fundamentals. Find something that you really love to do, and make it love you back.
