Peaceful transitions to #DannySimmons, the multi-talented artist, fierce Black arts advocate, trailblazing gallerist and generous philanthropist. A painter, poet and author, Danny provided a platform and launched the careers of countless Black artists, some of whom I learned about and met through him. From his galleries in Chelsea, NYC (long before that area was gentrified) and Philadelphia, to co-creating the groundbreaking Def Poetry Jam on HBO, to co-founding Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, he highlighted, supported, held space and created community for Black artists, creatives, collectors and children to gather, connect, learn and be inspired. May his life, legacy and impact be forever acknowledged and celebrated. Sending my deepest condolences to the many people whose lives he touched and feel this tremendous loss.
