View while knitting on the 'LillyPad' #babyblanket for the #yearofbabyknitting I finally got a couple of pride flags this year and it has just filled my heart everyday. Seeing the colors bright in the sunshine! Or as my flag snaps in the wind and rain. My pride flies strong. I’m not saying this for pity or because I’m not grateful for my life (tactics that people have tried to use to gaslight me in the past) but I need to face the reality of that truth and work out how to navigate my life with it in the background. So if you are someone that has white privilege sit by it, ask questions, educate yourself, get curious. ••• 🔸Look at the ways you are complicit in the narratives being perpetuated about BIPOC in your own life 🔸Believe women, believe black women. 🔸Resist the urge to diminish, question or gaslight someone’s experience 🔸Put your feelings about someone’s tone aside and look instead at how what they’re saying might be true 🔸Don’t choose the ignorance of your privilege but wake up to it and use that power to help those that don’t have the same power 🔸Do your own work, don’t take anyone’s word for it. 🔸When you make a mistake stop conflating yourself with the mistake. We all know you’re a good person you don’t need to try to prove that to us by defending yourself. Acknowledge the mistake and ask yourself or a trusted people what you can do to course correct 🔸Don’t put the burden on your BIPOC friends to educate you 🔸Show up for your BIPOC friends and community. If you don’t know I wouldn’t recommend asking them, keep looking the answer will arrive. 🔸Dismissing someone’s experience and painting yourself as a victim is violent. Learn how if you’re unsure why. 🔸Respond to someone who is in pain with the same kindness you would respond to yourself as a child. And if you can’t be that generous go away and find out why (a lot of us can’t, you’re not a bad person if you can’t you’re simply noticing it) 🔸if you need to take breaks but don’t stop, don’t give up, evolve, if something doesn’t work try a new way. You will make mistakes and that’s ok people appreciate your humanity more than your perfection 🔸Everyone needs a support system, don’t do this work alone whether it’s a virtual or physical community don’t hide in shame.
