MY PLAY IS GETTING STAGED??? 🤮📝🎭
*this is a copy of my post from the theatre kids community*
So, this is insane, but a shitty 30-minute play I wrote for my senior project in high school is being staged at a college, for a SECOND TIME.
May 2023– wrote a 20-minute, part-verbatim play for my senior project in high school
October 2023– I pitched said play concept to a professor for the mainstage play for the next semester (in college), it got picked to be reworked into a 10-minute play
February 2024– it premieres for an actual audience as a staged reading as a part of the mainstage season
November 2024– I submit it to the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) for shits and gigs
December 2024– I get an email from KCACTF saying that my play was chosen, and I'm going to a week-long conference???
January 2025– I stage it again at my college as a part of a preview of works going to festivals (KCACTF, SETC, etc)
February 2025– I go to the KCACTF Region IV conference, we do a staged reading with a student director and a dramaturg and a whole casting process, and I get my regional finalist award (6 per region, 8 regions, I'm 1/48 regional finalists in the country???)
May 2025– my professor asks for permission to stage it for the college's ten-minute play festival as a part of their series for the local arts festival, and it's produced for a paying audience???
September 2025– I have transferred colleges, and I submitted it to the student theatre group for them to do a staged reading.
October 2025– I get an email saying they want to produce it as a part of their November staged reading with a director and actors!!!!
Meanwhile, I've listed the script on NPX, and got it formatted with a print-on-demand service so I can get physical, official scripts, AND I set up my own website and mailing list, and people can now like license my play???
This is literally so crazy and surreal 😭
Like people read it and were like, "hmmmm how about an award and also produce it and order copies to read," like it's INSANE!
Anyway, like in my head, I'm still a little middle school theatre kid reading Mean Girls the musical fan-fiction on my iPad, so this is crazy, but I guess I'm like a whole 20-year-old adult now??? And a theatre professional??? And award-winning playwright 🤮
Ew, yuck, disgusting, puke, gross.
Anyway, if anyone wants to read it, it's called Overturned (by me, Amber Dunton) on New Play Exchange (a lot of colleges and some high schools give you access with your student email address through the library), or it's on my website!
Also, like content warning (because I'm a responsible adult) for swear words, medical settings, and mentions of abortion.
