have you seen that post about how the 'you bugged my house' scene hits different with a gay columbo. it haunts me
YEAH i have so many thoughts about it...i particularly like how they discuss columbo's lack of a raincoat during the scene symbolizing his vulnerability. i think it'd be super interesting to analyze how the raincoat actually functions as a symbolic device over the course of the whole series.
i would say it generally represents columbo's external persona. not just the usual columbo persona we think of, how he tricks the killers into underestimating him and all that. for this scene particularly, the raincoat would represent how he presents as "straight" to everyone around him; and now that he lacks it, how the truth about him being gay has been found out.
we learn right alongside columbo during the bugging scene that the killer had this massive power leverage over him and an intrusion into his personal life that we hadn't really seen up till that point in the show?? before this, columbo rarely talks about his personal life. if the killers knew anything about columbo and "mrs" columbo, it's only what he'd told them himself. his straight public persona was perfectly secure. however, when the bugging scene flips that dynamic totally on its head.
anyone in columbo's position would probably be terrified. if the killer had outed him, his life could've completely been ruined. he's risking more than he ever has before to continue pursuing this case, now that the killer knows the truth. and what's missing while this is all happening? of course, it's the raincoat. his symbolic armor, his way of presenting himself to the world, has been taken away suddenly and unexpectedly. neither the viewer nor columbo know what this is going to mean for him, or what will happen next. it builds so much tension so quickly and effectively!! that's honestly why the scene is so great imo, even if the episode as a whole isn't one of my favorites.
ok im sorry i didnt need to write a whole essay of run-on sentences about this but clumbo is just such a fascinating little guy to me :]
