It seemed like a very awkward attempt to establish she plays the violin, but it was extremely awkward. They do some similar stuff with Dave; randomly starts drinking the apple juice because that’s a thing, but missing the context and joke about it maybe being piss? Which doesn’t work because the entire point of the Apple juice was it being set up for Dave’s abusive living situation. Dave stashes food in random places because he’s food insecure, and the idea that his legal guardian would piss in his food and drinks sounds like something that could happen. Each Beta kid comes from an abusive/neglectful household save for John. Rose is being raised by an alcoholic, Dave is being raised by a physically abusive man and being exposed to sexual content by his “Bro,” and Jade is legitimately neglected because her legal guardian is dead. John has a completely loving non-abusive Father that he complains about constantly, while the others in abusive situations play it off as normal. This doesn’t come across in the pilot, the over-exaggerated Dad fight actually makes Dad come across as abusive! So, the random apple juice was for nothing. At least the alcoholism set up is still there with Mom Lalonde still carrying the martini.
