I fucking hate dysphagia and I wish something could've been done about it when I was a child but noooo, there was no such thing! It'll go away on its own! Well, it did NOT. And I still choke as much as I did. Now there is an extra thing where if I have too little in my mouth, I can't swallow. Like, the volume of what is in my mouth dictates if swallowing is going to happen. It's murder.

Anxiety: A difficult pill to swallow
Photo by Tara Winstead from Pexels.
About 3 months after my dad passed from cancer, I had trouble swallowing certain foods like lettuce and cucumber so I avoided eating them altogether. Lettuce was so “long” and I felt part of it getting stuck on my throat while cucumber was so “thick” and chunky, even when it was cut very thin and in really small pieces.Â
If I got invited to someone else’s house for dinner and they served salad with lettuce and cucumber, it took me forever to chew those into the smallest pieces possible (more like pureeing them inside my mouth) so I wouldn’t feel like choking and make a public scene while desperately trying to get the food out of my mouth while releasing gurgling sounds.Â
Once I stopped eating lettuce and cucumber, then other foods started to have the same choking effect. Same happened with hard coated tablets because in my mind if capsules and gelcaps got stuck in my throat they would rapidly dissolve by drinking lots of water.Â
Deciding what foods, candy, medicines had the highest possibility of getting stuck in my throat became an obsession.Â
Yet, I always felt like something was stuck in my throat and because of it I experienced constant shortness of breath thus, I became addicted to Halls Ice Blue and expectorants like Robitussin to temporarily reduce the incidence of such symptoms.Â
I ended up several times at the emergency room because I felt I was choking, I had something stuck in my throat. Doctors then, checked me and send me back home because my throat was clear and there was nothing, at least physical, besetting me.Â
Little did I know it was just a sign of the storm brewing... one that started without no one noticing ever since I was born.Â
That moment you're prescribed a medication that seems to work, but the side effects might be too much to endure.
