The general rules are: 1) You can only catch the first Pokemon you encounter in any given area. If you kill it or run from it, you’re SOL; 2) If a Pokemon faints, it’s considered dead, and you have to box or release it; 3) You have to nickname every Pokemon you catch, so that the bond with them is stronger.

I mix ‘em up sometimes by using AR codes to make all my encounters shiny, or using gift/static ‘mons as tokens to catch extra Pokemon in areas I’ve already been; just little stuff like that. There are lots of variants, but I don’t like most of ‘em all that much.
