When you talk about Dick and self sacrifice its easy to focus on Bruce, partially because of the famous "I'd die for you" panel and partially bc there are numerous instances where he actually puts those words into practice, but its been shown that he readily throws himself into mortal danger for any of his loved ones, and also strangers, civilians, and villains (on occasion, which emphasize the few times he chooses not to save people, cough cough)
And ofc this isn't unique to Nightwing, self-sacrifice and heroics go hand and hand and everything I'm about to say definitely applies to some of the Bats and other non-meta heroes (Bruce especially)
At some point it loses its impact, ya know? If in the heat of the moment you'll die for anyone what does it mean that you'll die for one specific person as well? You can't give your life to someone more than you give your life for others, self-sacrifice is an action not really an ideology as Dick often treats it.
Taking a bullet for a random civilian is the exact same action as taking a bullet for your partner of 80 20-some years. You can't die for someone twice (except this is comic books and you can but its generally considered a writing faux-pas)
"I'd die for you." "You'd die for anyone." How do you contrast such a strong devotion with an abject disregard for your self preservation?? The love is there, absolutely, but why does the intent matter when the outcome is the same?? What's the fucking difference??? Uhg!
Its so very interesting to me how Dick treats his own life, at a certain point self-sacrifice becomes selfish and concerning, more like suicidality than heroism (as most strongly evidenced by Chemo) and I feel like we should talk about that more
I wish I could like, make some smart character analysis of Dick Grayson but in my mind there’s just “I love him” going on a loop.
Sometimes I feel a little insane abt him. Idk how to explain it, but sometimes it feels like he’s all I can think of but the thoughts aren’t coherent. They’re just a mess of “omg omg omg I love him i love him omg omg jesus fucking- omg omg he’s just he’s just he’s just he’s just he’s just”
like, why can’t I think smart things abt how he is so self sacrificing and how he wouldn’t exchange what he has to bring back his parents and he thinks Bruce would and how he just blames everything on himself and how he cannot kill and I hate the fanfics where he kills the joker because that would wreck him so much and and and and and and
the robins represent a different part of batman pt. 1
each robin embodies a different part of batman and his mission. dick grayson is batman’s determination.
even though dick’s a lot chattier and generally more light-hearted as nightwing/robin, he’s always wanted to be a hero ever since his robin days. he won’t give up on the people of bludhaven, on the titans, on his family, even when they give up on him.
he does not give up on the people he strives to save, the same way batman does not give up on his mission, even though batman puts his mission over his family at times.
Ngl, I think one of the worst parts about Dick being mistreated by others, especially Bruce, is that he very rarely, if EVER seems surprised by it.
Like... every time that Dick has been hit by someone close to him, i.e. Bruce, he never seems surprised or shocked. Maybe briefly stunned, or sad, but never actually shocked or surprised.
It makes me sad, how Dick almost seems to expect people to get violent with him when they're upset, at least with Bruce.

Okay but can we talk about how the fandom acts like it'd be a great idea for Bruce and Harvey to reconcile and for Harvey to essentially be a part of the batfamily??
Cause everyone acts like it'd be cute! Uncle Harvey this, uncle Harvey that- and on the surface level, it is!
But um.
Are we forgetting that Two-Face nearly beat Dick to death when he was, what, 12-14 years old? And that Dick genuinely hates Two-Face, and for good reason?
That event was DEEPLY traumatizing for Dick. It completely changed his perspective on things because he'd never had the shit beaten out of him before, nor been so close to death. Shit, I think it's implied in the comic that Dick might've needed to be resuscitated, but it's unclear. Regardless, Dick was captured, tied up, and beaten bloody with a baseball bat, and was left broken on a warehouse(?) floor. He BARELY survived- Bruce was almost too late.
And, well, doesn't that sound eerily familiar? That's REALLY similar to what happened with Jason, the difference is that Dick lived and Jason didn't. But somehow no one seems to consider that Dick MIGHT not want to spend time with his almost-murderer.
On top of that, no one seems to consider the consequences of what would happen if Harvey DID reform and more or less become part of the batfamily. Because like,, it'd be bad.
First off, I can't see Dick being friendly at all with Harvey, even knowing he's reformed. He'd be glad Harvey's reformed, I'm sure, but I doubt he'd tolerate Harvey being in his presence for long.
Secondly, Dick would have ISSUES with Bruce. I can't imagine he'd be at all happy knowing Bruce is trying to be all buddy-buddy with the man who nearly killed him as a child. And, honestly, with Bruce being... well, Bruce, I can't see him immediately telling Dick, and instead Dick would absolutely find out the hard way. That by itself would cause a mountain of issues, I have no doubt that Dick would be PISSED.
And then there's the trauma side of things. I have zero doubt that Harvey being around so often would trigger Dick, and dealing with that trauma being brought up again and so frequently would be harrowing and exhausting.
And I can't imagine Dick not struggling with his fears and insecurities, especially if Bruce is being a stubborn asshole about it. I highly doubt Dick would want Bruce to stop being friends with Harvey, but if Harvey gets close to the rest of the batfamily, I imagine it'd be HARD to avoid him. Something something, Dick not being heard (as per usual), feeling like Bruce is choosing his sons almost-murderer over him, etc.
Just. Gestures. I don't think it'd go over well at ALL. Dick wouldn't at all be happy.
Granted, this is IF the rest of the batfamily befriends Harvey too and doesn't know what happened. I think Tim canonically knows (Dick did tell him in a comic), but I'm not sure about the rest.
Regardless, yall get my point. It's like if the Joker was reformed and Bruce befriended him and forced Jason to have dinner with him. Not exactly fun!
all non-meta heroes are like 40 to 70% more regimented in my head than they are in both canon and fanon
in my head I’m constantly like, there’s no way they’d go right to sleep after patrol, there’s no way they sleep that little or that much, there’s no way that they aren’t eating correctly, there’s no way they aren’t always drinking water!!!!
people that are this smart know what is sustainable for their bodies and what isn’t, yes the bats especially are famous for pushing themselves way too hard but that should be an indication that there is something wrong (internally or externally) and not a constant state for them, even Bruce should know that running yourself into the ground over one night makes it so you won’t be able to help anyone in the future
