As she slowly turned in the bed, she caught sight of Diana sitting at her bedside. Asleep, but no worse for wear. Leave it to an amazon to come out of a mystic battle unscathed. Her head turned to take in more of the room around them, and she recognized it with a start. 

After all, she’d been called in on more than one occasion to play healer to various team members in this very same room. They were in the Watchtower’s medbay.

She turned when the otherwise rhythmic beep of her ECG began to match the quickening pace her mind was taking, immediately trying to place where the offending tool was attached to her body.

Hospitals were never a strong suit for the magician, least of all when she was on the receiving end of care.

Her movements were stilled, when Diana reached forward with her own hands to catch the mage’s.

“You can’t honestly expect to get better by tearing things out arbitrarily, can you?” she teased, pulling Zatanna’s hand up to gently kiss her knuckles.

“But I am better,” she argued, before amending with her most winning smile, “Now that you’re here.”

Diana laughed, reaching back to pull her seat closer to the bed, not breaking the hold she had on Zatanna’s hand.

“But evidently your flirting hasn’t gotten better,” she shook her head, “The doctor will never give you a clean bill of health at this rate.”

“Like I need some quack’s permission,” Zee said, rolling her eyes as she reached up again with her free hand to begin taking the electrodes off.

The amazon intercepted that one as well, sliding over from her chair to sit along the side of Zatanna’s bed instead. The magician shifted slightly to give her room, but frowned when she continued to keep her hands hostage.

“Diana…”

“Zee.”

“I’m fine. I promise-”

“And I’m sure you’re eager to get right back to work,” she hummed, “But what we desire and what is safe can often be two separate entities, my love.”

She leaned forward to kiss Zatanna’s forehead, and the magician found herself blushing when the ECG picked up pace to match her rapid heartbeat.

“At the very least let me take this thing off,” she whined, “I’m not going to die from a heart attack… Well…” 

She scoffed, but squeezed Diana’s hands with her own then. 

“Unless you’ve got some damned big surprise waiting for me when I leave, that is.”

“Hmm, I could think of a few surprises that I have for you,” the amazon hummed, resting her forehead against Zatanna’s as her voice shifted into a whisper, “But that will have to wait for when we’re home.”
