College/high school au of Dan Heng and reader. Slight hurt/comfort? It’s a happy ending guys I promise<3
“Take it, you’ll get sick.” Those were the first words you remembered Dan Heng had said to you back in high school. Rain had continued to pour around you both as he stood there holding his umbrella over your head.
“…thanks.” You vaguely remember taking the umbrella from his warm hand before he walked away. You still have his umbrella to this day. Sitting next to all the presents you’ve received from your friends back in high school sits Dan heng’s umbrella; Sometimes, you even open it and see if it still smells- (OKAY THATS ENOUGH)
Dragging yourself out from your bed you headed to your scheduled lecture. Maybe today would be better?
Whoever said college was going to be the best years of your life has clearly never gone to college.
Wrong. Ohh they couldn’t be more wrong.
You very foolishly thought had you picked classes for the afternoon/evening, you’d feel more motivated to go to them. Instead all you got was late marks, absences and missing assignments. You were not motivated to say the least.
Sitting in the lecture hall where the teacher went on and on about covalent and ionic bonding only seemed to tire you out even more as you spot a black and white bird outside your window. The bird was carrying a green jade bracelet which reminded you of Dan Heng.
How you missed high school.
Dan Heng used to be your class president who was infatuated with you. It was actually because of one of his class president duties you remembered meeting him.
“I am Dan Heng. Class president. I’m here to work with you-“
“Dannie~ nice to meetcha!”
“…” (he folded like a ironing table)
And then they kissed. Or it was close to kissing- actually he asked you out in the library and you leaned in to kiss him only to fall on his because you lost balance on your chair. Cute
Dan Heng was the sweetest — and only — guy you dated. He constantly bought you flowers, tutored you and even bought you stuff from the vending machine.
“When did you start liking me?”
“…honestly… when you offered me a pen in math class back in primary.”
The loud thud of people’s books closing woke you up from your daydream, signalling the end of class. Good grief, you could finally return to the comfort of your dorm and bed.
You can’t sleep again. Aeons fucking help you. You want so bad just to close your eyes and doze off to dreamland only to be hit by a wave of insomnia right before you were going to sleep.
As you turn to your other side for the 1000000th time you recall the comfort of Dan heng’s bed when you slept over at his place once. Wrapped up in his warm embrace… how you longed for those days again.
The cold breeze coming from your window only served as a bitter reminder.
“…im breaking up with you.”
You turned the other side and clutched your pillow tighter. You didn’t wanna remember any of it. Didn’t want to remember the abyss that opened below your feet on that day. How your heart stopped beating, how your joints stiffened, how you suffocated.
The streets were as empty as they were silent, you glanced up at the moon above you as you walked towards the very pier he broke up with you on.
You so desperately just wanted to block out the memory, to keep the feelings of loneliness and abandonment at bay. But your mind just wouldn’t let you as it guided your body closer and closer to the spot.
Arriving at the dock, glancing out at sea the moon reflected back at you, mocking you. Ah it was also a full moon on that faithful day.
“I’m going to study abroad, I can’t- I won’t hold you back. I don’t want you to suffer from miles away.”
“I’m not- we can do long distance!”
“Please, don’t wait for me. I want you to live out your college dreams.”
“I don’t want any of that! Dan heng… im begging you-!”
“I’m doing this because I love you. Probably too much, probably out of selfishness too. I’m sorry. Goodbye, my treasure.”
Thus cue the five hours of ugly tears, ice cream and movie marathon you went through after that.
You felt your face get wet as a tear escaped from your left eye; although it could as easily be from the sky. The pitter patter of the rain had started becoming louder and more obvious the longer you stood on that deck. Hah, who’d think a love story as broken as yours would cause even the heavens to weep?
Your eyebrow raised quizzically as you turned to look behind you as you felt the rain around you stop. No, that’s not right, you could still see the water droplets falling around you so why weren’t you getting wet?
“Take it, you’ll get sick.”
The sight was one to behold. Your ex boyfriend, standing right behind you, holding an umbrella over your head; he looked as handsome as ever.
He let a few seconds of silence fall between you guys before placing his jacket on you. The look in his eyes was so sincere, so warm, he looked exactly the same as when he left.
“For the break up, I won’t make excuses. It was my fault and my responsibility to bear. I know you probably don’t forgive me right now but I still have feelings for you, my treasure. I- I came back because I couldn’t chase the dream I wanted, because you weren’t right by my side.”
“It’s nice to see you still remember this place, that you still remember me. Goodbye, reader.”
With that he left his umbrella in your hands before turning and leaving. That didn’t stop you from noticing the tiny second of hesitance right before he started leaving.
You knew it was rash, you knew you needed to make him repent, to regret all the words he said to you. Yet the sight of him walking away once again sent a spear through your heart.
You weren’t going to let him walk away, not again.
In a few strides you broke out into a run and tackled his waist into a hug when you reached him. Feeling your arms around his body served to make him smile, just a bit but still a smile.
Maybe this time he’ll be part of your college dreams.
my mother walked into me writing this at 12 am and she started lecturing me about how I needed to try harder at school instead of wasting my time. Apparently since I go to private school all the As I get are worthless and I’m just an idiot.
