Sometimes, when Dhe-hak observes the original trio of the Re-menda, he can't help but see his old friend group in them.
What they used to be and he still wonders what they would have been in the present if Se'eit never died and N'rithe didn't become a matriarch out of revenge and grief for her.
Yet it will always be an unspoken wish of Dhe-hak: he knows the past can't be changed and he focus on enjoying the present with what he has.
At least his and N'rithe's daughter seem happy together, that's all Dhe-hak could have desired; he is also glad Kajiy found a safe spot in them and he is opening more from his closed, solitary shell, just like Se'eit did with N'rithe and Dhe-hak back then.

"I think I have found my soulmate." Se'eit sighed in adoration, resting her face on her hand.
Vah'ta, Paya's priestess, followed the gaze of her colleague, stopping to look at a red huntress and at a green hunter in the training area.
"Which one?"
"What do you mean which one? Look at her. She is the most gorgeous of all hunters here! Her scarlet scales are the same shade of blood, and her toned physique shows her soul's strength. " Se'eit purred, never stopping looking at her new champion.
A loud crack caught the attention of Vah'ta: N'rithe smashed with her head a wooden board and was stumbling on her feet after the hit, letting out a loud laugh.
Next to both hunters, there were the remains of previous broken boards. She was trying to prove that her head was tougher than Dhe-hak.
Vah'ta looked baffled at the scene, then back at Se'eit. She was surely joking. That huntress was someone that Vah'ta didn't even think Se'eit would be interested in.
"That one???"
"Yes" Se'eit smiled. "She is unique, isn't she?"
Another cracking sound disturbed the forest's quiet, followed then by a rough thump.
N'rithe fell down, holding her head, which was bleeding after a harsher hit. Dhe-hak was next to the huntress, worryingly trying to clean the wound, letting her sit down.
Se'eit couldn't hold her laugh, rushing to climb down the tree to reach and help her dear huntress.
Vah'ta let out an exasperated sigh, crossing her arms. "Oh Paya, help us"
my trophies are all wips i keep hoarding, but i wanted to share a close up of Dhe-hak. I write scenarios and play his story in my head more than I draw it.
He is currently happy as a single dad and a teacher for the young bloods, but he remains on good terms with past mates he had a kid with. He used to have a human partner as well, in the clan territory. So far he doesn't have a forever mate.
He is just a chill dude that flirts around a lot (during mating season he is a big show off.)
While he is the father of Hu'nri'a, Rak'ne as well started to see him as part of her own family, since he spent a lot of time with N'rithe and trained both Rak'ne and Hu'nri'a.
Dhe-hak also trained Kajiy to become a hunt teacher: he is happy when the Re-menda comes back and Kajiy helps around with the young yautja for a few days.
- Before becoming a matriarch, she was an impulsive hunter with a kind heart.
- After years of hunting, she ended up becoming an Enforcer: she saw first hand how damaging and cruel bad bloods could be...but also how some of them were being unfairly judged as bad bloods, due to not satisfying the harsh rules of their own clans or because of their mental health.
- She climbed each clan rank as fast as she could because she wanted to become a temple guard (One of the highest honors in the Naghe-tih clan). That way she would have been closer to her mate Se'eit and see her whenever she wanted.
- She lost her right arm to a Queen Kainde Amedha in a disastrous hunt that killed all her party, Se'eit included. Only survivors were a Ra-taro and the ex matriarch I-viath'i.
- The skull of that same queen is displayed in N'rithe throne room. It's the only trophy she doesn't feel honor about, only anger, yet she keeps it as a statement of her matriarch's position.
- N'rithe killed I-viath'i and banished or killed those who supported her. The action was harsh, as well as the sudden change of laws, yet N'rithe was able to clean the name of the Naghe-tih clan with time and reestablish order.
- Along the Rehabilitation Program for Bad Bloods, she started to expand the trades of food, medicine, and other items with nearby clans to ensure the well-being of the Naghe-tih. So far, the Tear Clan and the Prairie Clan are those who happily trade with Ra-taro riders.
- She has often received the title of champion during Ra-taro rodeos in her young years. N'rithe took the occasion to show off her abilities to Se'eit.
- Her main hobby was wood sculpting. Some of her pieces were put into the temple of the clan or she used her abilities to make toys for Rak'ne. It was a way to keep training her patience. N'rithe stopped sculpting after the death of Se'eit.
- Her, Dhe-hak and Se'eit used to be a close trio that shared many moments together, both good and bad. Often, the other two had to stop N'rithe from challenging every hunter that dared to look at her in the eyes in a "funny" way.
- When she was carrying Rak'ne, N'rithe insisted on keep hunting even during her third trimester (Dhe-hak had to drag her back to her house multiple times and Se'eit comforted her with promises of endless hunts after this birth).
- Despite her current mental health and attending her duties as matriarch, N'rithe always makes time to stay with her only daughter. Every time Rak'ne comes back from her mission, N'rithe takes a free day to spend time with her. Often, she let's her daughter talk about her travels or they both share a lazy Ra-taro ride in the forest. If N'rithe has more free time, she will join her daughter in a light hunt.
- She is indifferent to the presence of humans, although she was surprised to see Rak'ne took Valka as a mate. Her daughter didn't give her the impression to be interested in humans.
- She grew to be fond of this human, she is a proud "mother in law" and often treats Valka with fun stories regarding Rak'ne's childhood or showing pictures of her daughter.
- N'rithe has a few severed locks hidden beneath the others. They were cut while rescuing Rak'ne from some poachers that were bold enough to enter the clan's territory.
- She has a Ra-taro that, from hunting, was trained to be a therapy animal for her. The Ra-taro name is Ven'te. She is rather mischievous but loyal to the matriarch. She was the only Ra-taro surviving the Kainde Amedha disaster.
- N'rithe suffers from ptsd and survivor guilt, yet she never talked about this with any healer of the clan. Dhe-hak had to convince her to vent to him, to ease her days and to let her be able to focus on Rak'ne and the clan.
The Naghe-tih clan has strict rules regarding where the Ra-taro are allowed to go in a hunt.
A Kiande Amedha hunt is not one of these.
Ra-taro are strictly forbidden to be around a xenomorph.
To become a hunter, young ones have to learn how to cohesist and hunt with the Ra-taro.
Yet, since the Naghe-tih clan doesn't allow Kiande Amedha hunt for their blooding, the Blood Hunt consist of going to other planets to hunt other dangerous animals, where the Ra-taro can be useful companions and have higher chances of survival.
They are sacred animals and having one infected by a face hugger would lead to a catastrophic sin to the clan's eyes.
N'rithe killed Gahra, the previous matriarch, because she deceived them enough to bring a pack of Ra-taro inside a Kiande Amedha nest.
Kiande Amedha becomes a hunt reserved for when the new hunter gains more experience and is confident enough for a solo hunt without their personal Ra-taro (usually, yautja of the Naghe-tih Clan will try to kill a Kiande Amedha before mating season start, to court potential mates with).
The cooperation between the hunter and their Ra-taro is the focus of this rite of passage: the animal get assigned to the yautja since a young age, so they both get trained at the same time.
If a young hunter gets their Ra-taro killed during the Chiva, a whole trial will focus on the matter, deciding the fate of the young blood by checking the recording of the mask: if the death was caused by something out of control from the hunter, they will be granted another chance to prove themselves, however with stricter rules.
If the death of the animal was caused by the reckless and irresponsible behavior of the hunter, because driven by a big ego or greed, they will be exiled from the clan, condemned to always be Unblooded (This was unfortunately the case of one of the many sons of Dhe-hak).
If the hunter gets killed in the Blood Hunt, yet the Ra-taro survived, then the new blooded hunters have the task to take the Ra-taro back safely. The animal will be given time to process the loss (Ra-taro are highly intelligent and emotional animal, they can mourn the death of someone they were close to), then the Ra-taro will be assigned to another hunter or to other tasks.
Valka's case was peculiar. Being a human who decided to join a yautja group definitely caused many question if they wanted to turn Valka into a hunter recognized by the crew and the clan.
Valka was trained together with rehabilitating bad bloods; when Rak'ne and Kajiy thought she was ready to approach the Naghe-tih Clan way, E'ko was the one who started training her, along with the other two hunters.
E'ko gave Valka her current Ra-taro, Ar'kte, who was a Ra-taro whose hunter, from another hunting party, died.
Valka had a hard time at first since the animal was way taller for her to climb on, nor could she mimic the command sound E'ko was teaching her, yet at the end she managed to do it her own way and starting to build a good bond with Ar'kte.
She passed her Blood Hunt successfully, much to the joy of the crew (and begrudgingly Kajiy too).
Once the Re-menda will be back to the clan's grounds, Rak'ne will need to show the recording of Valka's hunt to N'rithe, to demonstrate that the human is fit to stay in the clan.

Naghe-tih clan has training sessions or games that involve Ra-taro riding and learning how to fall without too much damage.
This involves the Ra-taro bucking off the rider or putting the yautja through harsh riding situations.
For training sessions, young yautja are taught to use their legs' strength and balance to not get thrown off by the Ra-taro.
They learn to stay on top of the animal no matter the hunting conditions. They are also taught to prioritize the safety of the Ra-taro over their well-being, when possible.
Especially wannabe trainers have the duty to practice regularly this training, they will be the one riding and handling the Ra-taro more than other hunters.
As for the games adult yautja (even elders) attend to, it is seen as a way to prove their skills and hunter worth.
They are also used to impress other male or female hunters, especially when mating season is closer.
One of the main events is bareback riding.
Unlike young yautja, who train with a small saddle, the adults will ride the Ra-taro with no support at all during the bucking game.
The Ra-taro is not forced to do this. They actually perceive it as a game: they get many treats and praises if they manage to buck off the rider. Their pups also learn how to play without harming their yautja owner by watching them.
The Ra-taro have rough ways to play, which involves lots of biting and ramming against the other, so this is actually a tame activity for them.
The assigned handler will make a specific sound to give the animal the cue to start bucking.
The Ra-taro that manages to throw off as many yautja as possible is celebrated in an honorary way at the end of the games.
The Ra-taro are super spoiled before and after the games, with handlers making sure the animal is well.
The slightest sign of fatigue or distress and the Ra-taro is taken back to their resting spot.
Yautja from other clans are welcome to take part in these games. The Naghe-tih are proud of their Ra-taro and don't mind involving wandering traders or hunters in their social and cultural life.
It's often used as a way to establish trades or alliances between clans.
These games always end up crossing the celebrations that the Naghe-tih clan makes for the goddess Paya.
Once the riders that won the contests are rewarded and congratulated by the other participants, a long feast starts: food and music fill the jungle for four days and four nights.
Even the Ra-taro are dressed up for the occasions, with harnesses and saddles full of intricate decorations and drawings. They get all the delicious meals, and their skin is painted by the priests and acolytes of the temple.
Dhe-hak and Lancia often participate in these games with good results: Dhe-hak manages to court plenty of potential mates during these events, while Lancia is more focused on having fun and improving his skills.
N'rithe used to be a champion during these games, yet now she doesn't take part in it anymore.
She mainly organizes everything as the matriarch in charge and remains in the quiet of her home with her Ra-taro, watching the riders and the rest of the clan having fun from afar.
Demonic Lair here: this is a one-shot regarding N'rithe and Dhe-hak, both having a conversation about Se'eit and Rak'ne. It's set decades back before the creation of the Re-menda group, when Rak'ne and Hu'nri'a still have to become blooded hunters.
Warnings: the story has mentions of ptsd, panic attack, death and grief.
_____
Erylia: a type of reptilian bird domesticated by the Naghe-tih clan.
Ra-taro: a predator used as ride and hunting animal by the Naghe-tih clan.
Na'rato: word to indicate Ra-taro handlers.
(These species and terms were created for my story, revolving around this clan.)
N'rithe was petting absently her Ra-taro Ven'te, looking at the yautja training. Her den, situated at the top of the giant tree that grew in her territory, allowed the matriarch to observe every detail of the clan life.
Among the young ones there was her daughter Rak'ne. She looked so happy and carefree, with not a worry heaving on her shoulders. N'rithe thought of Se'eit every time she looked at her daughter.
The sounds of steps coming from behind her made the matriarch tense as she snapped out of her thoughts. Ven'te rested her chin on the yautja's laps, paying attention on her heartbeat and breathing.
Dhe-hak was standing at the door, holding two glasses and a green glass bottle. N'rithe relaxed, resuming petting her animal.
"It's you" She stated, relieved. The scent of the hunter put her at ease.
"Care to share a drink with me, old friend?"
"You are older than me" N'rithe followed with the gaze the male, until he sat next to her.
"Oh the wounded pride! My own matriarch mocking my age." Dhe-hak snarled. "You are about to turn into an elder quicker than me."
They both laughed.
Dhe-hak poured the cerulean liquid, giving the glass to his friend. N'rithe was quick to drink it. The burning feeling on her tongue and throat was welcome.
Dhe-hak looked down at the training area. "She is a good student. She will have a promising career as huntress."
N'rithe looked back at Rak'ne: she was talking with Hu'nri'a, before being pushed playfully by the latest, starting to chase each other until one of the teachers reprimanded them.
"And Hu'nri'a is showing a certain skill to the medical arts." Dhe-hak looked at the matriarch. "I have no doubt they both will be honorable yautja in the future and they will bring good things to the clan."
Hu'nri'a...the stranded sea yautja that Dhe-hak found on a rogue ship. He considered her as his daughter, yet N'rithe welcomed the young one into her life as well since Rak'ne took a liking on Hu'nri'a. They developed a sisterly bond sooner than expected.
N'rithe let out a pleased purr. She was glad her daughter wasn't going to be alone in the far future. She filled her cup again.
"What are your plans for her?" Dhe-hak looked at the cerulean drink, tapping the claws on the glass.
"As long as she is happy and she won't cause any harm to the clan, she is free to take any decision she wants." Her eyes were now on the Ra-taro, altough she wasn't truly looking, her mind was distant with thoughts.
"What if she won't follow your matriarch steps?"
"Being a matriarch is something you earn and you must be ready for so many heavy responsibilities...Rak'ne is more of a free wandering spirit, like Se'eit."
"You mean she is more like you." Dhe-hak stated, his voice softening. They exchanged looks and N'rithe became more malinconic.
"Rak'ne reminds me so much of you, N'rithe. She is fierce, stubborn, at times impulsive but for good causes, with a strong sense of justice." The hunter put the glass down, moving closer to the matriarch.
She sighed, looking to her daughter again.
"Ironic, I see more of Se'eit instead...her fascination towards everything, her affinity with the Erylia, the way she can comfort others with kindness but firmly. Even her short, solitary explorations remind me of Se'eit. She took so much after her mother-"
Dhe-hak interrupted her, his voice turned grim. "You are still grieving for her, N'rithe."
N'rithe turned quiet, her grip faltered on the glass and that didn't go unnoticed by the hunter.
"It has been years, my friend. Your daughter is close to her Blood Hunt... you need to move on." he rested a hand on her shoulder. "I'm saying it for you, for Rak'ne. She always sees her mother complete her duties as an honorable matriarch, but you barely let yourself time to enjoy what life can give. You lock yourself in solitude. You would mourn day and night, let your thoughts drown you if your attention wasn't for Rak'ne and the clan..."
"I can't, not after everything. It took me enough to move on from the anger and betrayal the past matriarch caused. I won't let go of Se'eit memories. They still bring me comfort."
"I miss Se'eit too. She was a close friend to me, we shared many hunts and ceremonies, yet staying stuck in the past will only do you more damage." His tone was kind, but there was a hint of pain hiding.
"You speak as a friend, not as a mate...you didn't see the sides I learned to love of her. When I held her, I felt the world in my hands. I would have destroyed everything for her." Her voice trembled, her grip on the glass tightened. "I can't move on, not after what we shared, not after how I saw her die. Don't ask me to move on, I beg of you...I need to remember her, like I need air in my lungs. It gives me the illusion that she is still here, watching over Rak'ne, guiding us on the right path."
Ven'te let out a few snarls, pressing closer to the matriarch and nuzzling on the yautja's chest.
N'rithe was starting to breathe faster, her hands were trembling. The memories of the last kiande amedha hunt were overwhelming her. Scenes of the ex matriarch, drunk of ego and power, and Se'eit speared by the tail of the queen were haunting her. Her severed arm sent a phantom pain just at the memory of fangs and acidic blood on her.
"I feel if I don't claw at every memory I have with her, even the ones regarding her death, I might end up being a bad blood. I will risk to dishonor the clan, our daughter...I can't hurt her, she was the treasure of Se'eit. Rak'ne was- is everything to us, i can't loose her too."
Her voice was breaking with sorrow, the words rushing one after the other. Her mind was already creating catastrophic scenarios of losing her self-control, losing everything dear to her. The fear of never seeing her daughter. The loss of her wife. Everything was becoming too much for her.
N'rithe desperately searched for the Ra-taro, her hand holding on one of the back spine to try ground herself back.
Dhe-hak slowly crawled until his body was against the matriarch, low purrs left the elite hunter as he rubbed her back. Ven'te kept nuzzling agaisnt N'rithe chest, shifting part of her body on the matriarch's laps as she started to let out rhythmic chirps.
The weight of the Ra-taro's body and the purrs of Dhe-hak slowly started to bring the matriarch's mind and heart into calmness. She closed her eyes, taking deep breaths, focusing on the presence of Dhe-hak and Ven'te. She needed to take back control of herself.
The elite hunter gave a quick look towards the door, to make sure nobody was looking at the scene, but luckily no yautja would walk into the Matriarch's quarters without permission. He turned to face N'rithe again.
"Have you talked about it to one of the doctors? Maybe they can ease your state of mind." he talked with soothing tones, his hand kept stroking her back.
"I won't, I need to be the hand that holds together the clan. I can't let them know this is my state despite many years passed from that day. I can't look weak or immature." her tone was harsh, stubborn. She didn't want to show that side of her to other yautja, even if they were doctors.
The hunter let out a low growl. He could understand why N'rithe thought of her mental health in such way: the damage of the ex matrarch's ideas were still haunting the elder yautja of the clan.
Yet it didn't mean he was going to give up and see his friend going through so much pain.
Dhe-hak let out a sigh. "Then let your burdens on me, I want you to be at ease N'rithe. I'm not judgmental and Rak'ne is grown enough to understand when her mother lies about her health. You need to ease your soul."
N'rithe remained quiet, her fingers toying with the small spikes on the Ra-taro's head. Then she nodded. She trusted Dhe-hak with everything.
"I will, but only when you will be comfortable to do so" She shifted her focus on the hunter. "You are a trainer and an elite hunter, you have enough on your plate"
"Don't worry, my duties never stopped me to find time for myself or my friends." he smiled. "Perhaps, one day, I'll take you with me to a short vacation and we will collect all trophies and treasures we can find."
"Dhe-hak, with all my respect...your house is a mess of items and trinkets of all sorts. You can barely find space to lay down or eat...I won't have my place turned like that." She let out a weak chuckle at the thought of his house.
The situation was turning around. Seeing how she was trying to cheer herself up, Dhe-hak started to play again.
"I offer my helping hand to you and you stab me in the back, why don't you take my head and hang it next to your trophies while you are at it?" he smirked.
"Now that would be insulting for my collection." N'rithe tapped her tusks against each other, holding back a giggle.
Dhe-hak gasped offended, posing theatrically a hand on his chest. "My head is the most beautiful thing you will find in the whole clan. Every hunter will fight me to get my skull and have it in their living room!"
"First they will need to find you in that mess you call a house."
They both snickered as they poured more of the liquor in their cups.
Once they calmed down, Dhe-hak resumed his talk. "I must give it to you. Despite your memories, you let Rak'ne be free to travel as far as she can and hunts as she pleases...it's a sign of your growing inner strenght, my friend."
N'rithe let out a soft smile. "Me and Se'eit wanted her to fly high and carefree like an Erylia, run wild and strong as a Ra-taro. Seeing her this full of life and health makes me proud. I see it as an accomplishment of Se'eit will. I would never do something that would stop my daughter's path or that would shatter her happiness."
Dhe-hak was about to reply but the sound of quick footsteps interrupted them.
Rak'ne and Hu'nri'a were standing at front of the door, their breath still fast from the run. They quickly walked in, bowing with respect towards Dhe-hak and N'rithe, then Rak'ne kneeled next to her mother, while Hu'nri'a stood behind her sister.
"Me and Hu'nri'a will be off with the Head Na'rato and a few Ra-taro, we will be back in a couple of days" she smiled.
N'rithe took her hand, looking at her daughter: Her well mannered behavior was betrayed by the impatience to jump into another training session.
"Be careful and-"
"Don't hurt or bite the other students." Rak'ne interrupted her as she signed a cross above her heart. "I'll remember it this time, I swear."
N'rithe chuckled. "And have fun, my little warrior."
Dhe-hak looked towards the two young yautja with a smile. "Rak'ne, make sure Hu'nri'a doesn't wander for unknown herbs or chasing venomous animals. I would like my daughter to come home in one piece"
Hu'nri'a rolled her eyes, patting the shoulder of Rak'ne. "You have to say this to her. She is the one running around and biting other students' fingers off"
"I did it only once! And it was for a right cause, that idiot had it coming." Rak'ne huffed.
The two of them started to head out of the room, giving a last goodbye to Dhe-hak and N'rithe. Even from far away, N'rithe could still hear those two bickering and laughing.
Seeing her daughter that joyful made her own world less miserable. Rak'ne reminded her why she was still keeping her position as matriarch, despite the struggles she faced often.
N'rithe drank for one last time. "Let's finish the day with a positive note. It's time to program the first Hunt of their group."
N'rithe got up and walked towards the east side of the room, where her armor was hanged. However, she only grabbed her cape, locking it on her shoulder pads. Her missing arm ended up covered by the dark, scaley cloth.
Dhe-hak got up as well, grabbing the half empty bottle. "Where shall we send these unfortunate souls?" his fangs tapped on each other, amused.
"Some of the Na'rato suggested Earth, yet I'm thinking of sending them to U'lesyo, that planet where we used to hunt back in our days."
"Ah yes, where even the flowers and trees will try to eat you alive." he snickered, waiting for her at the door. "I'm sure the Na'rato won't mind. Our animals can handle that environment well and it puts enough challenges for the young hunters."
N'rithe smiled, letting out a whistle. Ven'te quickly got up, finding her spot next to the matriarch, her tail wagging.
"I wonder what Rak'ne will bring back from her Blood Hunt."
"Knowing Hu'nri'a, next to the skull, I'll be seeing bags filled with all sorts of plants and poisons. If I'm not careful, I'll end up eating one of her experiments" Dhe-hak huffed, thinking of all the dangerous bottles that were slowly filling his home.
They both chuckled, exiting from the matriarch's den and heading towards the council room.
N'rithe felt more at ease, caressing the neck of Ven'te. She had Dhe-hak supporting her, and Rak'ne was growing stronger each day, with a good conduct. She only hoped Se'eit was able to see them, from wherever she was in Cetanu's reign.
I feel the more I develop them, the more I'm close to start writing the story I have in mind, though I'll need to learn how to use Ao3 first, fix some plot stuff...and find a title for it too.
Anyway, I got sorted out now also the age of my characters, or at least the main ones that will be involved in this story, who more and who less.
It's all in human year standards because I'm not sure how to convert it into yautja years, and I'm also very bad at math.
The age of my characters change of a couple of years depending on when the story is set, but overall, I stuck with these numbers when drawing them or writing one shots.
Valka, 32
Rak'ne, 34
Hu'nri'a, 34
Kajiy, 33
Lancia, 27
Tha-garn, 30
Veduri, 36
Eliana, 30
Ha'rcar, 38
N'rithe, 56
Dhe-hak, 59
Se'eit, died at 27, she would have been 57
I'm still doing some concepts for Veduri, a bad blood, and Se'eit, huntress of the Naghe-tih clan and ex mate of N'rithe.
