The Great Hall had become dangerous approximately halfway through dinner.
Not dangerous in the ordinary Hogwarts sense. There were no escaped creatures beneath the tables, no cursed artefacts humming in corners, no suits of armour attempting to murder anyone with their own gauntlets.
It was considerably worse.
Albus Dumbledore was bored.
He had announced this fact while standing behind the staff table, wearing an expression of such serene delight that every student with even the slightest instinct for self-preservation had immediately looked down at their plate and attempted to become indistinguishable from the furniture.
āI find,ā Dumbledore had said, folding his hands pleasantly before him, āthat dinner has become rather repetitive.ā
Hundreds of heads had lifted.
Forks had stopped midway to mouths.
āWhat does that mean?ā Peter whispered.
āNothing good,ā Remus said immediately.
Across the Gryffindor table, James had leaned sideways to peer at Dumbledore with interest. āMaybe heās changing the menu.ā
āHe is not changing the menu,ā Lily muttered.
āYou donāt know that.ā
āHe has that look.ā
āWhat look?ā
āThe one that says heās about to ruin someoneās evening and call it education.ā
Sirius, sprawled across the bench with one arm hooked over the back, narrowed his eyes at the headmaster. āI respect it.ā
At the Slytherin table, Regulus had not bothered looking up at all.
He had continued cutting into his dinner with the calm precision of someone who had already decided that whatever nonsense Dumbledore intended to inflict upon the school was beneath his notice.
Barty, however, was watching the headmaster with bright interest.
āThis could be funny.ā
āIt wonāt be funny if it happens to us,ā Evan said.
āIt would be funny if it happened to you.ā
Pandora tilted her head. āI think he may be planning theatre.ā
Dorcas looked at her. āWhat makes you say that?ā
āHe has installed a stage.ā
Everyone looked.
There was, in fact, now a stage standing in front of the staff table.
It had not been there three seconds earlier.
Regulus slowly stopped cutting his food.
āNo,ā he said.
Evan glanced at him. āHe hasnāt done anything yet.ā
āHe has manifested a stage during dinner. Iām refusing in advance.ā
At the front of the hall, Dumbledore opened his arms.
A curtain of shimmering gold unfurled behind him. Footlights burst into life along the edge of the stage. Several enchanted spotlights wheeled overhead like enormous, excitable birds searching for prey.
āTonight,ā Dumbledore announced, āwe shall be enjoying a musical showcase.ā
The Great Hall erupted.
Some people cheered.
Many groaned.
Several students attempted to crawl underneath their tables.
Dumbledoreās eyes twinkled more brightly with every visible sign of terror.
āI have selected several songs from my favourite Disney films.ā
There was a brief, confused silence.
James turned to Lily. āWhatās Disney?ā
āMuggle films,ā Lily said, already pressing her fingers to her forehead. āAnimated ones. Mostly.ā
āMuggle musicals,ā Mary added.
Sirius brightened. āSo people sing while things happen?ā
āYes.ā
āThat sounds brilliant.ā
āIt is,ā Lily said. āWhen trained performers do it voluntarily.ā
Dumbledore continued as though he had not heard the rising panic.
āI shall choose students at random. Costumes and choreography will be provided. Participation is compulsory.ā
The panic became immediate and violent.
āI withdraw my support,ā Sirius said.
āYou were his favourite ten seconds ago,ā Remus reminded him.
āIāve matured.ā
The first victim was dragged onto the stage by a ribbon of sparkling magic while trying to grip the edge of the Ravenclaw table.
Dumbledore dressed the unfortunate boy in an enormous red crab costume and made him perform āUnder the Sea.ā
He could not sing.
He could not dance.
He also appeared to have forgotten how knees worked.
His costumeās claws were too large to control, and midway through the number, he accidentally struck one of the enchanted fish dancers hard enough to send it spinning into Dumbledore.
The Great Hall screamed with laughter.
James collapsed against Sirius.
Peter was wheezing into his sleeve.
Lily tried to cover her mouth but failed when the crab costume rotated in the wrong direction and continued dancing with its back to the audience.
At the Slytherin table, Barty stood on the bench to applaud.
āEncore!ā
āNo,ā the Ravenclaw boy gasped.
āAgain!ā
āSit down,ā Dorcas said, yanking Bartyās robes until he dropped back onto the bench.
The second performance involved two Hufflepuffs who had apparently been arguing for three years and were forced into matching royal costumes for āA Whole New World.ā
They refused to look at each other.
The enchanted carpet beneath them lurched into the air anyway.
One of them sang every line through clenched teeth.
The other kept deliberately stepping on his feet during the choreography.
When the carpet swept above the Gryffindor table, the first Hufflepuff hissed, āStop elbowing me.ā
āYou stop breathing on me.ā
āWeāre singing a love song!ā
āThis is not love!ā
Dumbledore conducted from below with both hands, delighted.
Alice had tears in her eyes from laughing.
Frank was holding her upright by the shoulders while laughing almost as hard.
āTheyāre going to kill each other,ā Alice managed.
āAfter the final note,ā Frank said.
āRomantic,ā Marlene declared.
The third performance was āBe Our Guest,ā involving a terrified fourth-year in an enchanted candelabra costume and an ensemble of floating plates.
The plates had better rhythm than he did.
The fourth was āHakuna Matata,ā performed by three students who had been magicked into animal costumes and immediately began fighting over who had to wear the warthog head.
By then, dinner had been completely abandoned.
Everyone had turned on the benches to face the stage. Students were standing on seats. House tables had dissolved into chaos. Even those who had initially protested were now shouting suggestions and placing bets upon who would be chosen next.
Dumbledore looked across the hall.
Every head ducked.
Every voice vanished.
Regulus continued eating.
Barty stared at him.
āYou do realise looking calm makes you more noticeable.ā
Regulus lifted his goblet. āLooking frightened would entertain him.ā
āExisting entertains him,ā Evan said.
Pandora watched Dumbledoreās gaze travel over the tables. āHeās looking here.ā
āNo, he isnāt,ā Regulus said.
āHe is.ā
āHeās looking past us.ā
āHeās smiling at you,ā Dorcas added.
āHe smiles at everyone. Itās his most threatening habit.ā
At the Gryffindor table, Sirius had also noticed.
His face split into a grin.
āOh, no.ā
James followed his gaze. āWhat?ā
āHeās looking at Regulus.ā
Remus leaned slightly to see around Peter. āHe is.ā
Marlene slapped both hands against the table. āPick him.ā
Mary gasped. āYouāre evil.ā
āPick him!ā
Fabian and Gideon joined her immediately.
āRegulus!ā Fabian shouted.
āRegulus Black!ā Gideon yelled, cupping his hands around his mouth.
Regulusās eyes slid towards them with lethal calm.
The twins waved.
Dumbledore lifted one hand.
The spotlight struck Regulus directly in the face.
The Slytherin table exploded.
Regulus closed his eyes.
Barty fell sideways against Evan, shrieking with laughter.
Evan slapped both hands over his mouth, though his shoulders were shaking.
Pandora applauded delicately.
Dorcas leaned across the table. āYou refused in advance.ā
āI did.ā
āPerhaps he didnāt hear you.ā
āHe is about to.ā
Dumbledore beamed down the hall. āRegulus Black.ā
āNo.ā
The answer came so quickly and so flatly that the entire hall went silent.
Dumbledoreās smile widened. āDo come forward.ā
āNo.ā
āYou have not yet heard what you shall be performing.ā
āI donāt need to.ā
Sirius twisted around on the bench, grinning openly now. āGo on, Reg!ā
Regulus looked at him. āDie.ā
James made a choking sound.
Peter buried his face in Remusās shoulder.
Lily covered her smile with one hand while Mary and Marlene clung to each other.
Dumbledore extended his fingers.
A line of gold magic curled around Regulusās waist.
Regulus immediately seized the edge of the Slytherin table with both hands.
āNo.ā
The magic pulled.
His plate slid after him.
Barty grabbed Regulus around the shoulders, supposedly to help him remain seated, though he was laughing too hard to provide any useful resistance.
āIāve got you!ā
āYouāre pushing me.ā
āIām supporting you emotionally.ā
āYou are pushing me towards the stage.ā
Evan caught the back of Regulusās robes.
For one hopeful second, all three of them remained in place.
Then Dumbledore flicked his wrist.
Regulus was pulled off the bench.
Barty and Evan went with him.
Pandora calmly lifted Regulusās plate out of the way before it could fall.
Dorcas leaned back as the three boys were dragged several feet across the floor.
āTraitors!ā Regulus snapped.
āWeāre trying!ā Evan said, skidding after him.
āNo, youāre not!ā
Barty lost his grip first and sprawled flat on the stones, still cackling.
Evan released Regulus a moment later rather than be pulled underneath the Ravenclaw table.
Regulus continued sliding towards the stage, boots scraping uselessly against the floor.
The Great Hall was deafening.
Students pounded their fists against the tables.
The Slytherins were screaming loudest of all.
āCaptain!ā
āGo on, Black!ā
āShow them how itās done!ā
Regulus caught the corner of the Hufflepuff table.
The magical ribbon tightened.
His arms stretched out.
āI am not performing for you people!ā
Marlene stood on the Gryffindor bench. āYou absolutely are!ā
āShut up, McKinnon!ā
Fabian cupped his hands around his mouth. āGive us a dance, Black!ā
āIāll give you a concussion!ā
Gideon slapped Fabianās shoulder. āHeās already in character.ā
At last, Regulusās fingers slipped.
He shot across the remaining stretch of floor and vanished behind the enchanted curtains.
The hall roared.
Sirius was laughing so hard he had folded over the table.
James pounded him between the shoulder blades.
āYouāre enjoying this far too much.ā
āIāve waited my entire life for this.ā
āYou didnāt know Disney existed half an hour ago.ā
āIāve waited half an hour for this.ā
A moment later, Regulus emerged from behind the curtain under his own power.
He looked murderous.
His robes were slightly crooked from the struggle. His hair had fallen over one eye. The golden ribbon still circled his waist like a glittering leash.
Dumbledore stepped towards him with the patient expression of a man soothing a hostile cat.
āRegulusāā
āNo.ā
āI believe you will enjoyāā
āNo.ā
āIt is a very stirring piece.ā
āI hope it stirs someone else.ā
Dumbledoreās eyes gleamed. āI should like you to sing āIāll Make a Man Out of You.āā
The Muggle-born students screamed.
The pure-blood students looked around in confusion, then began screaming too simply because everyone else was doing it.
Lilyās mouth dropped open before she started laughing.
Mary grabbed her arm. āThat song?ā
āThat song.ā
āIs this going to be good?ā
āIt could be catastrophic.ā
āBetter.ā
Onstage, Regulus stared at Dumbledore.
Dumbledore stared back.
Regulus folded his arms. āNo.ā
āTen points from Slytherin.ā
The Slytherin table booed.
Regulus did not blink. āTake twenty.ā
āA week of detention.ā
āMake it two.ā
āWith Mr Filch.ā
Regulus hesitated.
Barty shot to his feet. āStay strong!ā
Evan grabbed him by the back of his robes and pulled him down.
Dumbledore continued gently, āAnd perhaps another fifty points.ā
A wave of outrage rolled through the Slytherin table.
āDo it, Captain!ā
āJust sing!ā
āSave the points!ā
Regulus turned and looked at his own house.
They stared back at him.
He pointed at them. āCowards.ā
A seventh-year shouted, āWeāre trying to win the cup!ā
āYou should have considered that before encouraging him!ā
Dumbledore waited pleasantly.
Regulus slowly turned back.
āFine.ā
The hall erupted into cheers.
Dumbledore clapped his hands once.
Regulus raised one finger. āBut I have a question.ā
āYes?ā
Regulus glanced over his shoulder towards the entire school, then back at Dumbledore.
āAm I being typecast because Iām Asian?ā
For one perfect second, there was absolute silence.
Then the Great Hall detonated.
Sirius made a sound so loud it was almost a bark and fell directly off the bench.
James lunged to catch him and missed.
Peter choked on nothing.
Remus covered his face with both hands, his shoulders shaking.
Lily dropped her forehead against the table.
Mary screamed.
Marlene was bent double, slapping Aliceās arm while Alice gasped helplessly against Frankās shoulder.
Frank had gone bright red from trying to breathe.
Fabian and Gideon stood together on the bench, clutching one another like shipwreck survivors.
At the Slytherin table, Barty had collapsed across Evanās lap.
Evan was staring at Regulus with his mouth open, caught somewhere between horror and admiration.
Pandora nodded thoughtfully as though Regulus had raised a valid academic question.
Dorcas simply put her head down on folded arms and laughed.
Dumbledore, utterly unashamed, grinned.
Regulus stared at him.
āYouāre not even denying it.ā
āI believe you will look splendid.ā
āThat is not an answer.ā
āIt is the answer you are receiving.ā
Sirius dragged himself upright, still laughing. āHe got you there!ā
Regulus looked over at him. āYouāre Korean too.ā
Siriusās laughter stopped.
Dumbledoreās gaze shifted.
Sirius dropped beneath the table.
āNo,ā his muffled voice said.
Regulus smiled for the first time.
It was not a kind smile.
āInteresting.ā
Dumbledore lifted both hands before Regulus could continue.
Magic burst over the stage.
Regulus vanished inside a spiral of red, black and gold.
The wind of it swept his robes away and replaced them with a fitted warriorās costume: dark trousers tucked into sturdy boots, layered armour in deep crimson and black, gold fastenings crossing his chest, bracers covering his forearms and a long sash secured at his waist. The cut was unmistakably theatrical, something drawn from a Disney vision of an ancient warrior rather than a precise uniform, but it fit him with infuriating perfection.
The magic caught his hair next.
Regulus jerked his head away.
āDo notāā
Too late.
His usual carefully arranged fringe was swept back and broken apart, revealing the natural streak of pale blond running through the dark hair at the front.
The Great Hall went mad.
The sound hit the ceiling.
Regulus stood beneath the lights, one hand halfway to his hair, wearing dark armour and a look of stunned offence.
At the Gryffindor table, James stopped laughing.
His eyebrows climbed.
āOh.ā
Remus looked sideways at him. āWhat?ā
āNothing.ā
āThat was not a nothing sort of āoh.āā
James gestured helplessly at the stage. āLook at him.ā
āWe are all looking at him,ā Lily said.
Mary stared openly. āThat hardly seems fair.ā
Marlene nodded. āItās deeply unreasonable.ā
Alice leaned past Frank. āI didnāt know his hair did that.ā
āNeither did I,ā Frank admitted.
Peter blinked. āDoes he always look like that?ā
āNo,ā Sirius said immediately.
Everyone turned to him.
Sirius scowled. āHe does not.ā
āHe very much does,ā Remus said.
āHe looks ridiculous.ā
āHe looks like heās about to lead an army,ā Fabian said.
Gideon whistled. āIād enlist.ā
Sirius shoved both hands over his ears when the Slytherins began chanting.
āCaptain! Captain! Captain!ā
Barty had climbed onto the table and was pointing at Regulus as though personally responsible for his existence.
āThatās my best friend!ā
āYou say that every day,ā Evan said.
āAnd every day Iām right!ā
Evanās eyes had not left the stage. āThe hair is new.ā
Pandora smiled. āIt is lovely.ā
Dorcas glanced at the shouting Slytherins. āTheyāre never going to behave at practice again.ā
āThey donāt behave now,ā Evan said.
āThatās because he terrifies them.ā
Onstage, Regulus touched the pale section of hair and glared at Dumbledore.
āPut it back.ā
āAfter the performance.ā
āNow.ā
āAfter.ā
āHeadmaster.ā
āRegulus.ā
The two stared at one another.
Then six random students were ripped from different house tables and deposited onstage in simple training costumes.
One landed on his knees.
Another stumbled backwards into the curtain.
A third immediately attempted to flee and bounced off an invisible magical barrier surrounding the stage.
Regulus watched them.
They watched Regulus.
Dumbledore handed him a long wooden pole.
Regulus looked down at it.
Then he looked at the ensemble.
The ensemble collectively stepped back.
Barty slammed both palms on the Slytherin table. āThey know!ā
A magical drumbeat rolled through the Great Hall.
Regulus tightened his hand around the pole.
āDo I actually have to dance?ā
āProper acting and choreography,ā Dumbledore said. āWith enthusiasm.ā
āI donāt possess enthusiasm.ā
āThe magic will assist you.ā
Regulusās expression changed.
āWhat does that mean?ā
The music began.
Regulusās right foot slid backwards without his permission.
His shoulders squared.
The pole snapped upright in his hand.
He looked down at his own body in betrayal.
Dumbledore retreated from the stage, delighted.
Regulus was pulled forward by the choreography, marching towards the ensemble with the smooth, controlled stride of a commander inspecting a deeply disappointing collection of recruits.
The spotlight followed him.
He drew in a breath.
When he sang, the first words came out rough, low and stern.
āLetās get down to business.ā
The hall fell silent in sheer surprise.
Regulusās voice was nothing like the uncertain performances that had come before. It was boyish but deep enough to carry, gruff around the edges and smooth beneath it, every note clean. There was a lilting quality buried in the sharper delivery, something controlled and effortless that made the words cut clearly across the hall.
āTo defeat the Huns.ā
He swung the pole around his body in a tight, flawless circle.
One end stopped an inch from an ensemble studentās nose.
The student went cross-eyed looking at it.
Regulusās mouth twitched.
āDid they send me daughters when I asked for sons?ā
The ensemble was yanked into a straight line by magic.
They were not remotely straight.
Regulus walked down the row, using the pole to prod one studentās shoulders backwards, push anotherās knees apart and lift a third studentās chin.
āYouāre the saddest bunch I ever met.ā
The Slytherins screamed.
āThatās practice!ā someone shouted.
āThat is exactly how he talks to us!ā
Regulus glanced towards his house without breaking the rhythm.
The look was so familiar that half the Slytherin Quidditch team immediately sat straighter.
āBut you can bet before weāre throughāā
He planted the pole against the floor and used it to vault.
His body lifted cleanly into the air.
He twisted horizontally over the stunned line of students, armour flashing beneath the lights, then landed on the other side without so much as a stumble.
āMister, Iāll make a man out of you.ā
The entire school erupted.
James was on his feet before he seemed to realise he had moved.
Sirius turned on him. āWhose side are you on?ā
āHis, currently.ā
Onstage, Regulusās magical choreography pulled him into a slow, measured sequence of movements.
He lowered the pole.
His voice softened without losing its stern edge.
āTranquil as a forest.ā
He stepped between two students attempting a defensive stance and adjusted both of them with sharp taps against their arms.
āBut on fire within.ā
The beat strengthened.
Regulus spun, dropped low and swept one leg in a circle. The nearest student was compelled to jump over it, landed badly and windmilled both arms.
Regulus caught the back of his costume before he could fall.
āOnce you find your centreāā
He set the student upright.
Then he poked him directly in the stomach with the pole.
āYou are sure to win.ā
The student doubled over.
Regulusās eyes flashed with amusement.
Barty screamed, āDo it again!ā
Evan grabbed his sleeve. āStop encouraging him to assault the ensemble.ā
āHeās teaching.ā
āHe stabbed him in the stomach.ā
āWith wisdom.ā
The ensemble attempted a coordinated martial-arts sequence.
One student punched left while the rest punched right.
Another turned completely around and nearly struck the person behind him.
Regulus stopped in front of them, visibly appalled.
āYouāre a spineless, pale, pathetic lot.ā
He hooked the pole behind one studentās ankle and tugged it into the proper stance.
āAnd you havenāt got a clue.ā
The student beside him raised both hands helplessly.
Regulus slapped the pole across his palms until he formed fists.
āSomehow Iāll make a man out of you.ā
The drums accelerated.
The ensemble scattered into different training stations created by the magic.
One was forced to run in place while carrying two heavy buckets.
Another attempted to climb an enchanted pole that stretched towards the ceiling.
Two more sparred with staffs and immediately became tangled together.
Regulus moved amongst them like a merciless commander, the choreography dragging him from one disaster to the next.
The first ensemble student staggered forwards, panting dramatically.
āIām never gonna catch my breath.ā
Regulus walked alongside him, not remotely sympathetic, and used his pole to push him onwards when he tried to slow.
The second student was being dragged backwards by a rope tied around their waist.
They reached hopelessly towards the audience and sang, āSay goodbye to those who knew me.ā
Regulus turned his face away to hide a laugh.
The third student attempted a forward roll.
He got halfway, became stuck on his shoulders and toppled sideways.
āBoy, was I a fool in school for cutting gym.ā
Marlene screamed with laughter.
Mary clung to her. āThat one might actually die.ā
āRegulus wonāt let him.ā
Regulus prodded the student with the end of the pole.
The student rolled onto his back.
Regulus prodded him again.
The student scrambled upright.
A fourth ensemble member watched Regulus demonstrate a sequence of strikes against an enchanted training dummy. The dummyās head flew off and sailed into the curtain.
The student stared at him in horror.
āThis guyās got āem scared to death.ā
The Slytherin table thundered its approval.
Frank glanced towards them. āThey genuinely are frightened of him.ā
āHave you seen him at Quidditch practice?ā Alice asked.
āNo.ā
āNeither have I, but I understand it now.ā
The fifth student crouched behind another, peeking nervously around their shoulder.
Regulus turned.
The student immediately straightened and sang, āHope he doesnāt see right through me.ā
Regulus narrowed his eyes.
The student smiled weakly.
Regulus pointed the pole at him.
He yelped and fled into formation.
The final ensemble student was suddenly confronted with an enchanted river rushing across the stage. It was shallow and entirely contained by magic, but the student stared at it as if facing the Black Lake during a storm.
āNow I really wish that I knew how to swim!ā
The student leapt.
He did not clear the river.
Water erupted in every direction.
Regulus was hit directly across the chest.
The audience howled.
For a second, he stood drenched beneath the lights, water dripping from his hair and armour.
His expression became very still.
Dumbledore was openly laughing.
Regulus slowly wiped water from his face.
Then the choreography seized him again.
The ensemble shouted, āBe a man!ā
Regulus sprinted forwards.
āWe must be swift as the coursing river.ā
He planted one foot at the edge of the magical water and launched himself into a front flip, clearing it completely and landing in a low crouch.
Every table shook beneath pounding hands.
āBe a man!ā the ensemble cried.
Regulus came upright with the pole already spinning.
āWith all the force of a great typhoon.ā
Three students rushed him at once.
He blocked the first staff, ducked beneath the second and kicked the third out of their hands. The staff flew upwards. Regulus caught it behind his back without looking.
Barty made a strangled sound and grabbed Evan by both shoulders.
āDid you see that?ā
āI have eyes.ā
āDid you see it?ā
āYes!ā
āBe a man!ā
Regulus tossed the second staff aside and ran towards one of the stage pillars.
āWith all the strength of a raging fire.ā
One foot hit the pillar.
Then the other.
He ran two steps up it, pushed backwards and turned in mid-air, armour and sash sweeping around him before he landed facing the audience.
His pale fringe had fallen partly across his forehead again, the blond streak bright beneath the spotlights.
āMysterious as the dark side of the moon.ā
The final note rolled through the Great Hall.
Half the audience simply screamed.
The other half had forgotten how.
James stared.
Remus glanced sideways at him again. āYouāre doing the face.ā
āWhat face?ā
āThe same one Sirius is doing.ā
Sirius snapped out of his own stunned stare. āI am not doing a face.ā
āYou both look as if youāve been struck in the head.ā
Peter leaned around Remus. āTo be fair, that flip was ridiculous.ā
Lily looked towards the Slytherin table.
Barty was standing on the bench again.
Evan had stopped trying to pull him down.
Pandora was smiling brightly, clapping in perfect time.
Dorcas had both hands around her mouth as she shouted towards the stage.
The Slytherins behind them were completely uncontrollable.
Several had started mimicking Regulusās posture.
One student stood on a bench holding a breadstick like a training pole.
Regulus saw him.
The breadstick was immediately lowered.
The music shifted into a darker marching rhythm.
The magical scenery transformed. Training posts rose from the stage. Banners snapped into place above them. The ensemble scrambled into a ragged line while Regulus stalked in front of them.
āTime is racing toward us till the Huns arrive.ā
He struck the floor with his pole.
The ensemble marched forwards.
One went left instead of right.
Regulus caught them by the shoulder and physically turned them around.
āHeed my every order and you might survive.ā
The Slytherin Quidditch players roared again.
āThat is exactly what he says!ā
āWord for word!ā
Regulus pointed the pole at them from across the hall.
They fell silent.
Then one brave voice shouted, āWorth it!ā
Regulusās mouth curved despite himself.
The ensemble attempted a complicated set of kicks.
One student nearly fell.
Another kicked too early and struck a training post.
A third simply spun in a confused circle.
Regulus stared at them with growing theatrical despair.
āYouāre unsuited for the rage of war.ā
He walked down the line, knocking their weapons gently but decisively from their hands one after another.
āSo pack up, go home, youāre through.ā
The ensemble drooped.
One student started dragging an enchanted sack away.
Regulus hooked the pole through the strap and pulled them back.
The student slid across the stage on their heels.
āHow could I make a man out of you?ā
The ensemble looked at him.
Regulus looked at them.
The student still lying in the shallow river raised one hand.
Regulus pointed towards the formation.
The student scrambled out.
The music surged.
The entire hall rose with it.
The ensemble shouted, āBe a man!ā
Regulus launched into motion again.
āWe must be swift as the coursing river.ā
This time, the ensemble followed him across the magical water. Regulus crossed with a series of rapid handsprings, each movement clean and controlled. The others attempted the same.
One managed a cartwheel.
Another simply jumped.
A third fell in again.
Regulus caught the final student by the forearm and hauled them across before they could land in the water.
āBe a man!ā
Regulus swung the pole over his head.
āWith all the force of a great typhoon.ā
The ensemble surrounded him.
Staffs struck towards him from every direction.
He twisted between them, blocking one, redirecting another and stepping onto a lowered pole long enough to use it as a platform. He kicked upwards, sending an enchanted target spinning above the stage.
āBe a man!ā
The target dropped.
Regulus turned and struck it from the air with the end of his pole.
āWith all the strength of a raging fire.ā
The target flew across the stage and shattered into harmless sparks.
The school screamed so loudly that the enchanted ceiling seemed to tremble.
āMysterious as the dark side of the moon.ā
Regulus finished with the pole held across his body, breathing hard, eyes bright beneath his disordered fringe.
The ensemble formed up behind him.
For the first time, they almost looked competent.
The music did not stop.
It rose again, faster and louder.
The ensemble threw their fists into the air.
āBe a man!ā
Regulus ran towards them.
āWe must be swift as a coursing river.ā
Two students linked their hands.
Regulus stepped into the platform they made and was thrown upwards.
He turned once in the air, then twice, folding and unfolding with impossible precision before landing at the front of the stage.
Sirius shot to his feet.
āThat was three!ā
Remus blinked. āTwo.ā
āIt was three!ā
āIt was very clearly two.ā
āIt was at least four,ā James said, not looking away from Regulus.
Lily stared at him. āYouāve lost the ability to count.ā
āIāve lost several abilities.ā
āBe a man!ā the ensemble sang.
Regulus swept one arm out.
āWith all the force of a great typhoon.ā
The stage filled with enchanted opponents.
Regulus and the ensemble charged.
He ducked beneath a swinging weapon, rolled across one shoulder and came up behind the attacker. The pole hooked around its legs. One sharp pull sent it crashing to the floor in a burst of smoke.
The ensemble copied him.
Badly.
One student hooked their own ankle and fell.
Regulus grabbed the back of their costume, dragged them upright and shoved them towards the next opponent without missing the beat.
āBe a man!ā
The drums crashed.
āWith all the strength of a raging fire.ā
Regulus sprinted through the centre of the stage.
He kicked one enchanted weapon aside, spun beneath another and planted both hands on the floor. His legs cut through the air in a wide circle, knocking two opponents backwards before he sprang upright again.
The final enchanted figure rushed him.
Regulus dropped the pole.
The audience gasped.
He ran directly towards it, stepped onto its lowered shield, vaulted over its head and landed behind it.
The pole, still spinning from where he had released it, bounced upright from the stage.
Regulus caught it.
He struck the enchanted figure between the shoulders.
It burst into a fountain of golden sparks.
āMysterious as the dark side of the moon.ā
The music ended.
Regulus froze in the final pose, one knee bent, the pole angled behind him, pale-streaked fringe falling across his face.
The ensemble stood around him, exhausted, soaked and dishevelled.
Silence held for less than a heartbeat.
Then the Great Hall erupted.
Every house was on its feet.
Gryffindors screamed and hammered the table.
Hufflepuffs stamped their feet.
Ravenclaws shouted themselves hoarse.
The Slytherins had abandoned all remaining dignity.
Barty launched himself onto Evanās back.
Evan staggered but caught him under the knees.
āCaptain!ā Barty shrieked.
āGet off me!ā
āTake me to him!ā
āNo!ā
Pandora stood on the bench applauding, her face glowing with delight.
Dorcas whistled sharply through her fingers.
Behind them, the Slytherin Quidditch team had begun chanting again.
āCAPTAIN! CAPTAIN! CAPTAIN!ā
Regulus remained onstage, breathing heavily.
He looked across the hall.
The cheering only grew louder.
Marlene grabbed Maryās hands and bounced in place.
āHe can sing!ā
āHe can fight!ā
āHe can flip!ā
āHe can threaten people musically!ā Fabian added.
Gideon pointed towards Regulus. āThat may be the best thing heās ever done.ā
Frank was clapping hard enough that Alice had to catch his goblet before it tipped over.
Alice laughed. āHe looked like he was enjoying it at the end.ā
āHe absolutely was.ā
āHeāll deny it.ā
āOf course he will.ā
Peter climbed onto the bench for a better view. āDo you think he actually trains like that?ā
Sirius folded his arms. āNo.ā
Everyone looked at him again.
Sirius scowled. āStop doing that.ā
Remusās mouth twitched. āYou seem proud.ā
āI seem horrified.ā
āYou stood up during the last flip.ā
āI was preparing to leave.ā
āYou shouted the number of rotations.ā
āI was criticising his technique.ā
James finally looked away from the stage. āWhat was wrong with his technique?ā
Sirius opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Lily smiled sweetly. āGo on.ā
Sirius sat down.
āI hate all of you.ā
Onstage, Dumbledore approached Regulus through the fading shower of golden sparks.
āSplendid.ā
Regulus straightened slowly.
His hair was damp. His costume was dusty. One sleeve had been torn slightly during the final sequence. He looked exhausted, furious and unfairly composed despite both.
āChange me back.ā
āIn a moment.ā
āNow.ā
Dumbledore turned towards the audience. āI believe Regulus deserves another round of applause.ā
Regulusās eyes widened.
The cheering began again.
āNo.ā
Dumbledore started clapping.
āDo not encourage them.ā
The applause became thunderous.
Regulus looked towards the Slytherin table.
Barty had finally climbed off Evan and was now bowing repeatedly towards Regulus.
Evan applauded with a crooked smile.
Pandora blew him a kiss.
Dorcas shouted, āEncore!ā
Regulus pointed the pole at her.
Dorcas grinned.
The Slytherin Quidditch team straightened instinctively.
Regulus looked over at the Gryffindors.
Marlene and Mary were both waving their arms.
Alice and Frank applauded beside them.
Fabian and Gideon had acquired two breadsticks and were attempting to recreate his staff choreography.
Fabian struck Gideon across the forehead.
Gideon retaliated immediately.
Peter was trying to explain one of the flips to Remus using his hands.
Lily was laughing at something James had said.
James was still staring at Regulus.
Sirius caught his brotherās eye.
For a moment, Regulusās expression sharpened.
Sirius lifted both hands and shouted over the crowd, āYou missed a spot!ā
Regulus stared at him.
Then he hurled the pole.
Sirius screamed and ducked.
The pole flew over the Gryffindor table and embedded itself upright in the floor behind him.
The Great Hall exploded for a final time.
Sirius slowly lifted his head.
Regulus stood onstage with one eyebrow raised.
Barty collapsed against Evan again.
Remus leaned over the table to inspect the pole.
āExcellent aim.ā
āHe tried to kill me!ā
āHe missed deliberately,ā Lily said.
āHow do you know?ā
Regulus called across the hall, āI didnāt.ā
Sirius pointed at him. āHe admitted it!ā
Dumbledore was laughing too hard to intervene.
Regulus turned back to him.
āClothes.ā
With another flick of magic, the armour vanished and his robes returned. His fringe fell neatly forward again, concealing most of the blond streak.
A loud wave of disappointed groans swept through the hall.
Regulus touched his hair.
Then he looked towards the audience in disbelief.
āAre you booing my fringe?ā
āYes!ā several tables shouted.
āShow us the hair!ā Marlene yelled.
Regulusās face went blank.
āNo.ā
The magical ribbon released his waist.
He stepped off the stage.
The moment his boots reached the floor, the Slytherins surged towards the edge of their table.
Barty met him first, throwing both arms around his shoulders.
āThat was the greatest thing I have ever seen.ā
āGet off.ā
āYou threw a weapon at your brothers head.ā
āIt was my weapon.ā
āYou looked beautiful doing it.ā
āBarty.ā
Evan reached them next and pulled Barty backwards by the collar.
āYou were good.ā
Regulus adjusted his robes. āI was being controlled by magic.ā
āThe magic didnāt sing for you.ā
Regulus paused.
Pandora reached up and gently moved part of his fringe, revealing the pale streak again.
Regulus caught her wrist.
āNo.ā
āIt is pretty.ā
āNo.ā
Dorcas appeared at his other side. āThe entire house is terrified of you now.ā
āThey were already terrified of me.ā
āMore terrified.ā
āGood.ā
Behind them, the Quidditch team began chanting for their captain again.
Regulus turned.
Every player instantly stopped.
He looked along the table.
No one moved.
No one spoke.
Regulus nodded once and sat down.
Barty dropped into the seat beside him, still grinning.
Evan sat opposite.
Pandora calmly returned Regulusās dinner plate to its place.
The food was still warm.
Regulus picked up his fork.
Across the hall, several hundred students continued staring at him.
He looked up.
āWhat?ā
The Great Hall broke into applause once more.
Regulus closed his eyes.
Dumbledore, still standing upon the stage, smiled with deep satisfaction.
Then his gaze began travelling across the tables again.
Every student abruptly sat down.
Sirius pulled the pole out of the floor and shoved it underneath the Gryffindor table.
James ducked behind Remus.
Peter attempted to hide behind James.
Lily lowered her head.
Mary dragged Marlene off the bench.
Alice and Frank faced their plates.
Fabian and Gideon threw the breadsticks away.
Barty slid beneath the Slytherin table.
Evan followed him without hesitation.
Pandora smiled serenely.
Dorcas hid behind her goblet.
Regulus alone continued eating, fringe once again arranged precisely over the pale streak, expression calm and completely innocent.

Hello! Please recommend other "genderweird stories." I'm always looking for more stuff like EGS.
"Like EGSā is a tall order - it does a whole lot of fun things with gender, heavily exploring both fantastical magic stuff and complicated real-world identities. Other stories I know tend to be more narrow in one or both regards, so itāll depend a lot on what specifically youāre looking for.
Incidentally, for anyone not familiar with EGS (El Goonish Shive), I recommend checking out the post I made two days ago for its 20th anniversary.
Anyway, hereās some things that come to mind out of stories Iāve enjoyed:
Ranma 1/2 probably needs no introduction, as a well-known classic genderbending story. I started watching the anime just this past week - I havenāt gotten far yet, but itās very funny. Itās a lot older than the rest of this list, giving it a particularly distinct feel which makes for a really interesting change of pace.
Fabiniku (āFantasy Bishoujo Juniku Ojisan toā, akaĀ āLife With an Ordinary Guy Who Reincarnated Into a Total Fantasy Knockoutā) is a much newer genderbending series, about two friends who get pulled into a fantasy world and are now trying not to fall in love. The manga has been running for a couple of years, while the anime (which is what Iāve been following) started just this past month. Itās extremely funny, and the writing and visuals are beautiful. (I heard about Fabiniku from following @demilypyroā, whoās been posting a lot about it and other anime and manga in this vein. If youāre looking for more, sheās likely to be a good source.)
Narcissist, Coward, Fool, and Traitor is a fantasy web novel about a team of four incompetent adventurers. Includes a lot of gender-related magic and exploration of the fantasy settingās take on trans issues, particularly in the storyās first act. Features quite possibly the funniest (and kinkiest) trans character Iāve ever seen.
Doing God's Work is a web novel about an organization of gods across the pantheons, from the perspective of Loki and their faction of rebellious gods. This settingās take on Loki is a lot of fun, and puts their shapeshifting powers to a great deal of use.
Misfile is one of the early transformation webcomics I read, before even EGS. I havenāt kept up with it in about a decade, but it still has a special place in my heart, and thinking back to it now, I may have to read the rest of it one of these days. The main character is Ash Upton, a high school street racer whose personal information was accidentally edited by a careless angel.
SGVY (Sparkling Generation Valkyrie Yuuki) is another transformation webcomic I read around the same time as Misfile, and have a lot of similar feelings about. Itās about Yuuki, a guy who gets turned into a valkyrie to fight monsters, and is an extremely silly magical girl parody. Seems the original site is no longer available.
Your Name (Kimi no Na wa) is an anime movie about a guy and girl who periodically swap bodies while living far apart, and have to find ways to communicate and work together. One of the most popular anime movies ever, which I hadnāt realized until looking it up again while writing this, but I can believe it.
Those are the ones that really play around with gender-related transformation stuff. Some other stories Iāve really enjoyed that arenāt necessarilyĀ āgenderweirdā per se, but have neat portrayals of major trans/nb characters:
Dreadnought and its sequel Sovereign are a series of superhero novels about a trans girl who inherits the powers of the strongest hero. She also gets a new body in the process, resulting in some interesting complications. Itās one of my favorite book series, and the characters are wonderful disasters - in particular the main character, Danielle Tozer, is a delightful ball of rage. Thereās a third book planned to complete the trilogy, although itās been taking a while.
High Guardian Spice is a magic school cartoon that released its first season a few months ago. Itās about several girls at a magic school, including Snapdragon, a closeted trans girl who begins to consider magical means of transition. Apparently its inclusion of trans characters has lead to a lot of people trying to sabotage it by spamming bad ratings, but the show itself is adorable.
Ikenfell is an RPG also set in a magic school, with a charming and very queer cast and a playable character lineup including multiple flavors of nonbinary. Itās a lot of fun and has a neat grid-based battle system, as well as great music made by the same people who did the music for Steven Universe.
Venus Envy is an old webcomic about Zoe, a trans girl going through high school and encountering a variety of forms of trouble. Frequently very unsettling, in some fascinating ways. Lot of content warnings here, probably more than anything else on this list.
Kanojo ni Naritai Kimi to Boku (āI Wanna Be Your Girlā) is a manga about a high school girl and the friend sheās in love with, whoās a trans girl. Itās really cute and does a lot of exploring attitudes around queer topics. Itās the only story on this list not to have any fantastical elements (although counting Venus Envy is debatable).
Mask of Shadows is a two-book fantasy novel series about Sal, a genderfluid thief who joins an assassination competition while seeking influence and revenge. Iāve only read the first book so far, but Iām planning on reading the second next week.
The Murderbot Diaries is a sci-fi book series (currently five novellas and one full novel) about āMurderbotā, a delightful agender cyborg built to work in security, and the humans and other AIs it reluctantly bonds with. Has a prequel mini-story posted here.
Infinity Train is a cartoon about a magic train that draws people onto it and compels them to solve a series of puzzles. It doesnāt technically have anything concrete, but I have to give it a mention here since pretty much everyone Iāve seen has interpreted the second seasonās main character as transmasculine. Great show, and Iām still bitter about it getting canceled.
Wayward Children (by @seananmcguire) is an ongoing fantasy series that recently released its seventh novel. Itās about a school for kids whoāve gone through doors to fantastical other worlds and now have returned home, changed by the experience. Itās got a lot of great characters - a major recurring character is Kade, a trans boy, and more recent books also feature Regan, an intersex girl.
Zombieland Saga is an anime about seven girls whoāve been raised from the dead as zombies and are trying to become idols. Itās cute and funny and very ridiculous, and the team includes Lily Hoshikawa, an adorable trans girl.
Also I canāt pass up the chance to mention my own story, Blood Knight! Itās a short fantasy novella about the absolute disaster of a trans girl in my icon.
Iād be interested in hearing any other recommendations anyone else wants to add, as well!
