A/N: A post-A Long Time Coming fic. I took inspiration from Deeksâ comment about Rountree needing dental work last night. I mentioned that of all people, Deeks had earned the right to make such a comment.

History Repeats
âHey Fatima, you need to give your statement,â Deeks said, popping his head into Rountreeâs little cubicle within the emergency department.
Rountree reclined in the standard hospital cot, a bloodied ice pack concealing half of his face. Fatima sat on the only chair in the room, squeezed as tightly to his side as she could be. She hadnât left him since finding him several hours ago.
âIâm not leaving,â Fatima responded, setting her chin stubbornly. Her hand clenched around Rountreeâs, a protective glint in her eye.
Rountree squeezed back, and said something, words distorted by the ice pack. And likely the damage underneath.
âNo, Iâm not going anywhere until I know your safe and in your own bed.â
âFatima, Iâll take good care of him. I promise.â Deeks gave her a solemn nod. If Kensi was in Rountreeâs place, heâs have a hard time stepping away too.
Rountree gave her an encouraging nudge, and after another look at Deeks, Fatima reluctantly rose.
âFine.â She jabbed a finger at Deeks. âBut if anything changes, you let me know right away.â
âAbsolutely,â Deeks promised. He waited until she was out of sight to take her place, though not as closely as Fatima had. âHey.â
âHey.â Rountree mumbled. He turned his head a little, keeping his chin lowered, but not enough to hide his swollen and bruised eye socket.
âHow you doing, man?â
âIâll live.â
He could drop it, like Rountree clearly wanted him too. Deeks had seen the look in his eyes when he thought no one was watching. He tried to put up a good front for Fatima, joking and assuring he was ok. It was clear he was struggling though.
Pursing his lips, Deeks leaned a little closer, dropping his voice.
âYou donât have to put on a brave face for me. How bad is it?â
In lieu of answering, Rountree lifted the pack, slowly turning his head so the light shone over the majority of his face. His lower jaw and lip had swollen to twice their normal size, dried and fresh blood mixing together to create a gruesome sight. The swelling and bruising would probably be even worse tomorrow.
âI think a couple of my teeth are loose,â Rountree admitted, words slurred and distinctly distorted. âLost one.â
âDamn,â Deeks muttered. He felt just a hint of phantom pain in the left side of his jaw. Pushing past it, Deeks offered Rountree a comforting smile. âI know it doesnât seem like it right now, but this will heal.â
âI donât know man.â Rountree swallowed thickly, blinking rapidly. He gazed up towards the lights, his breath suddenly uneven. âI thought I was going to die for real this time. They suffocated me, man. And no matter what I said, she just kept hitting me. I could feel my teeth shifting, and blood filling my mouthââ He broke off suddenly, chest heaving. âHow do I get past that?â
âDevin, hey. Devin, take a breath. Through your nose,â Deeks coached gently. Rountree took several deep breaths with his eyes closed. When he opened them again, he looked more in control again. âI get it.â
âYou do?â Rountree asked softly. He winced, pressing the ice pack to his mouth again. A look of sudden understanding flashed across his face as he realized that Deeks wasnât feeding him platitudes. âWhen?â
âThe Sidorov case.â
âI remember hearing about that.â He absentmindedly brushed his fingers over his jaw. âYou guys got pretty messed up.â
âYeah, it was rough,â Deeks agreed. âThe point is, I remember what itâs like for every breath, every time I clenched my teeth without thinking and I flashed back to that day.
âYou think it will be like that for me?â Rountree whispered.
âI hope not. But in the case that it does, you should know that there are a lot of people watching out for you. Donât pull away from them.â
âSounds like youâre talking from experience.â
Deeks huffed a humorless laugh. âI shut myself off from everyone, Kensi, the whole team, for a while. It was the very worst thing I coiled have done, but I was too deep in my own head and pain to even begin to know how to reach out. Thank god Kensi actually came to my apartment and basically insisted on staying.â
âHeh, sounds kind of like Fatima. She keeps saying sheâs not leaving me alone,â Rountree said.
âGood. Partners are supposed be the people we trust and count on most,â Deeks told him. He paused, hoping he wasnât truly overstepping a boundary here. He didnât want Rountree to be yet another statistic though; victim to the battle through mentality.
âAnd, if you ever need to talk, somebody to listen, or just to be there, Iâm only a text or a call away,â he added. âWhatever you need.â
Rountree nodded, eyes shiny, and he reached to grasp Deeksâ hand, shaking as he squeezed tightly.
âOh, and I also know the number of a really good oral surgeon. I think I can get you a family discount.â
Rountree let out a startled laugh, immediately wincing. He glanced down at the now melted ice pack and tossed it to the side.
âThanks, Deeks.â

A/N: This isnât to imply that Fatima isnât a capable partner, or anything like that. Simply that Deeks has been in a similar position, especially with consideration of dental trauma.

I'm satisfied with Fatima open ending and happy they didn't force anything to her romance or carrer wise. She is still growing and evolving as a woman and an agent.
As a Muslim myself, I loved her representation, was right and simple. Her journey was amazing and didn't revolve around her religion but herself as a normal individual.
As a Muslim, Her religion was shown without being the main focus, little things praying and fasting. Her style was good, simple, and suitable to her age, normal like Kensi, not exaggerating and overdoing(like other shows) .
As most young women, she made some bad decisions that led her to evaluate&question her life, work, and religion.
As an agent, she questioned her DC plan after meeting our team and Mac, still young learning.
As a woman, we saw her questioning her relationship. Is she settling for Ali as only a muslim, or does she need to keep her options open? Is choosing the easy path? Is he right?
oh man it's almost 3 am and im trying to sleep but my brain just had a moment and i wanted to put it somewhere and not forget
now i haven't watched rewatched any ncis la since the finale and my memory is not the greatest right now but i am going to explode
i remember, at least at the time, a lot of people unhappy with the retconning of Callen's backstory but fuck if it doesnt make sense. i mean we've seen him beat up, shot, tortured, and probably other shit i don't remember, but i don't recall it ever having a major impact on him? (someone correct me if im wrong ofc) not much of him having to "get back in the saddle" or any of that stuff.
and i mean the whole shit with his childhood, wherever they're going with it, it makes sense. child soldier, taught to withstand pain and stuff = not major emotional whump after injuries. it makes my brain crinkle.
Oooh, seeing that video Caleb just posted with the FBI agent and knowing heâs gonna be shirtlessâŠRoundtree got an old flame coming to town?
