In English folklore, Black Shuck, Old Shuck, Old Shock or simply Shuck is the name given to a ghostly black dog
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the name Shuck derives from the Old English word scucca - "devil, fiend", from the root word skuh- to terrify
Legend says that on Winsford Hill on autumn nights, a traveller may be stopped by a black hound with glowing saucer eyes.
If he tries to advance he will die, either at once or very soon, but if he stands still the dog will slowly vanish until only its eyes still glow.
As soon as they disappear the traveller is free to move on, but some lesser ill-luck will follow.
There was once a farmer whose frightened pony danced near to the spectre before he could stop it.
The farmer did not die, it was the pony who collapsed half a mile from home.

My grandpa Harold Defoor going to get some in Europe in WW2........his nose is bloodied from a bar fight the night before (yeah I know-apple/tree).......wish I could have met him and that he lived long enough that the two of us could have a beer and talk about war. 🇺🇸 Lost my father in law last year and he was a WW2 vet from the South Pacific. 🇺🇸 My uncle did over three years straight deployed as an infantryman. Killed a bunch of krauts and told me about one unarmed nazi he didn’t shoot one day and later found out that German killed a man in his company after finding a battlefield pickup weapon. 🇺🇸 In the late 90s through the early naughts when I was still active my neighbor was an Airborne badass who drank a sixer of Natty light everyday in his driveway.........his wife had passed so me and my shooting partner stopped by one day to say hello and brought some silver bullets with us. The old man drank our “sissy beer” and asked us if we were “legs”? Of course we said we were Gods gift to free fall and at the time we both had over 500 halos/hahos each. I asked the old man how many jumps he had. “Two” he said.........first one into Normandy and the second into Italy........he only did the tower in training. 🇺🇸 Make no mistake the WW2 men and women were the baddest motherfuckers to walk this earth and it will always be that way........harder than you.......harder than me.........harder than everyone. 🇺🇸 Talk to one if you can before it’s too late.
