4th August 1577, the infamous sighting of a ghostly black dog in St. Mary’s parish church of Bungay, in the south east of England, during a a great ‘tempest of violent raine, lightning and thunder,’ as the storm shock the church a strange and terrible shaped creature was seen to enter, resembling a hellhound it violently attacked members of the congregation before disappearing. Twelve miles away in the town of Blythburgh, the creature reappeared at the Holy Trinity Church, where it continued its attack of the congregation there. The events were recorded in the same year by the English clergyman, and poet Abraham Fleming (Flemyng). The creature is said to be that of Black Shuck, the name given to a ghostly black dog which is said to roam the coastline and countryside of East Anglia, England. Embedded in the folklore of the area, the name Shuck may derive from the Old English word ‘scucca’ meaning demon or possibly from the local dialect word ‘shucky’ meaning shaggy or hairy. Further north there are also the tales of other spectre dogs, the white ‘Gallytrot’, (‘Gally’ being an old word for fright); and the ‘Barghest’ of York, who enters the city and preys upon travellers in the narrow mediaeval lanes, such as the most famous known as the ‘Shambles’. A Black Dog has also been seen as the site of the Norman motte and bailey castle known as Clifford’s tower, the site of the 1190 massacre of the Jewish population. Despite living for nearly two years opposite the tower, I unfortunately, (or fortunately if the impending doom aspect is to be believed), did not lay eyes upon the creature. The Black Shuck of Winsford Hill
The Black Shuck of Winsford Hill
In English folklore, Black Shuck, Old Shuck, Old Shock or simply Shuck is the name given to a ghostly black dog
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the name Shuck derives from the Old English word scucca - "devil, fiend", from the root word skuh- to terrify
Legend says that on Winsford Hill on autumn nights, a traveller may be stopped by a black hound with glowing saucer eyes.
If he tries to advance he will die, either at once or very soon, but if he stands still the dog will slowly vanish until only its eyes still glow.
As soon as they disappear the traveller is free to move on, but some lesser ill-luck will follow.
There was once a farmer whose frightened pony danced near to the spectre before he could stop it.
The farmer did not die, it was the pony who collapsed half a mile from home.

"All down the church in midst of fire, the hellish monster flew, and, passing onward to the quire, he many people slew". From British myth and folklaw, tales tell of this ghostly black demon dog with enormous glowing red eyes which haunts the landscapes of East Anglia, primarily coastline, graveyards, crossroads, and dark forests. And sighting it is regarded as an ill omen or of death. One of the most notable tales of Black Shuck is of his appearance at the churches of Bungay and Blythburgh in Suffolk. On 4 August 1577, at Blythburgh, as the people took refuge in the churches during a violent thunderstorm. Black Shuck (a word for Devil) burst in through the church doors to a clap of thunder. He ran up the nave, past a large congregation, killing a man and boy and causing the church steeple to collapse through the roof in a blaze of fire. It swiftly made it's way on to Blythburgh church therin it slew more people. As the dog left, he left scorch marks with its claws on the north door which can be seen at the church to this day.
Oh and there's a song about him too! XD
