I’ve never seen evidence in person that bridging mounts on an AR with modern rail to recover interface will cause an accuracy issue. At this point I’m well into 4 digits of military and civilians that have done it with no problems. The BCM mount you see here isn’t bridged as some have claimed. It along with some other mounts create an optical illusion from certain angles.
Why would it be done to begin with?…….the broad stroke answer is that optic companies are ahead of the mount companies in regards to proper eye relief, scope shadow, and reducing parallax on non-parallax adjustable scopes.
There are very few mounts that will cantilever the scope far forward enough while mounted on the receiver and be on 1 X that you can have the same speed as a red dot. Bobro Engineering is one and the new BCM A/T is as well. I’m sure there are more I just don’t know them.
When mounted correctly, you do not need an offset red dot for up close or speed in the standing. The scope should be set up with you in the prone since you get about half an inch taller laying down and that changes eye relief. You can use my flashlight trick to physically find out what is the proper eye relief on your scope and begin to set it up. Never do it sitting at a table or a bench as this is nowhere close to how far your cheek will be down the tube toward the ocular when shooting aggressively in the prone or standing.
Having a little scope shadow on max power is actually a good thing on a modern LPVO. Since there is no parallax adjustment if you use concentric scope shadow to keep your eye in the middle of the ocular lens, you will have no parallax induced windage problems at distance.
If you’re in a training environment and your mount will not go forward enough to make proper eye relief just bridge the gap to get the training done and then buy the correct mount when you’re done. You’ll at least know correct eye relief distance.
Most LPVO shooters will have more accuracy and speed issues with buttstock widths and heights that arent commensurate with optic height than they will bridging the gap.
