URGENT *tw periods* [1] I’m hoping for some guidance, I’ve been prescribed Desogestrel to try to stop my periods, but I’m really nervous about side effects like [chest] and [downstairs] pains similar to those during your period, which is one of the main reasons (after dysphoria) I need them to stop, because the pain cripples me.. If I’m going to start them it needs to be today or first thing tomorrow...
[2] *tw periods* and I don’t know if I’m more scared about what the tablets will do to me or what I will do to myself if I have to have another period. If anyone at all could offer advice I would appreciate any experiences from trans guys cause I’ve only heard from cis women.
Hi Anon,
Like every medication, there is the possibility of side effects and you will not know how or if these effect you until you give them a try.
The best thing to do is try them for an agreed time frame with your GP and ask for them to review how things go. If you find that you do have side effects that you cannot cope with, you can then discuss this further with your DR or GIC to look at what other options you have.
It is good to be aware of any side effects of medication and it is understandable to worry, but it really is up to you wether you want this to stop you from getting a treatment that may have the potential to either work for you or at least make this easier for you.
Can any of our followers offer their experience?
Study finds potential new uses for the contraceptive pill
Women are at a higher risk of stroke than men and there are currently very few effective treatments. However, a new preclinical study published in Cardiovascular Research reveals that the common contraceptive pill could help mitigate the effects of stroke on the brain.
The study tested the drugs desogestrel and drospirenone in progestin-only pills, both of which are commonly prescribed oral contraceptives, and found that the drugs helped reduce the levels of brain damage following a stroke.
The treatment could be of particular benefit to women at high risk of stroke and raises new questions about the potential health benefits of the contraceptive pill.

Submission: For the person asking about stopping periods
For the person asking about stopping periods. I’m in the same boat - and still far away from Testosterone or hysterectomy possibilities. I really would encourage you to ask your doctor to try various forms of the pill - I’ve had much success with Norethisterone/Noriday - didn’t lead to any feminising problems but have since changed because I was having to take 4 of the pills a day and I already take a lot of other medication. I’m now on Deostrogel not having quite as much success so far but my GP is going on some sort of Trans training event in a couple of months and said they would specifically ask which pill is best for this specific purpose. I will post when I find out!
Thanks for sharing! Do get back in touch if you find any more information which our followers might find useful.

Understanding Desogestrel Impurities: Safeguarding Contraceptive Effectiveness
Desogestrel, a progestin-based hormonal contraceptive, has been a reliable choice for women seeking effective birth control methods. Ensuring its purity and quality is essential for its efficacy and safety. Impurities in desogestrel, though present in small amounts, can significantly impact its performance and safety profile.
Impurities within pharmaceuticals are substances that exist in a drug product besides the desired active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). These impurities can originate from various sources, including raw materials, manufacturing processes, or degradation over time. In the case of desogestrel impurities, understanding and managing these impurities are crucial to maintaining its efficacy and safety.
Here’s a breakdown of the types and sources of desogestrel impurities:
Process-Related Impurities: These impurities stem from the manufacturing process itself. They might arise due to incomplete reactions, side reactions, or residual solvents used during synthesis. Strict manufacturing controls and purification techniques are employed to minimize these impurities.
Degradation Products: Over time, pharmaceuticals can degrade due to exposure to environmental factors like light, heat, or moisture. This degradation can lead to the formation of impurities, potentially compromising the drug's potency or safety. Proper storage conditions and packaging help prevent this.
Residual Solvents: Some solvents used during manufacturing may remain impurities in the final drug product. Manufacturers must ensure that these solvents are within safe limits as per regulatory guidelines.
Maintaining the safety and efficacy of desogestrel involves stringent quality control measures:
Analytical Techniques: Advanced analytical methods such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry are utilized to detect and quantify impurities in desogestrel. These techniques enable identifying and measuring impurities, even at trace levels.
Regulatory Standards: Regulatory bodies like the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and other international agencies establish strict guidelines regarding acceptable levels of medication impurities. Adherence to these standards is crucial to ensure the safety of the drug.
Continuous Monitoring: Quality control doesn't end after the drug is manufactured. Continuous monitoring and assessment of desogestrel's quality throughout its shelf life are vital to detect any potential impurity formation.
Patients and healthcare providers play pivotal roles in ensuring medication safety:
Adherence to Prescription: Patients must adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage and usage instructions for desogestrel. Consulting healthcare providers for any concerns or side effects is essential to ensure its efficacy.
Reporting Adverse Effects: Any unexpected side effects or changes experienced while using desogestrel should be reported to healthcare professionals promptly. This aids in evaluating and addressing potential impurity-related issues.
Desogestrel, as a contraceptive medication, undergoes rigorous quality control measures to ensure its safety and efficacy. The collaborative efforts of regulatory bodies, manufacturers, healthcare providers, and patients are crucial in upholding the integrity of this essential birth control method.
Maintaining vigilance in monitoring and addressing impurities in desogestrel underscores a commitment to women’s health and well-being.
