Dermoid Cysts
Anonymous said to @ask-drferox: Can you tell us about dermoid cysts? My dog has one but when I googled it all the information was either for humans or said they only turn up around the face, and hers is on her back just under her shoulder (a vet tested it and said that's what it is but didn't give me a lot of other info cause we were short on time, I did not diagnose the lump myself)
I’ve discussed dermoid cysts briefly in this post, but it took way too much effort to find it with Tumblr’s search function so I understand if you couldn’t find it.
A dermoid cyst is a congenital condition most common in the Rhodesian Ridgebacks. In dogs they usually occur along the dorsal midline - that is between the top of the skull and the base of the tail along the top of the dog. Very occasionally you’ll see one on the nose.
It’s a weird but cool embryology quirk that the spinal cord actually develops from the same tissue as skin on the outside of the body, it just pinches off and sinks deeper into the embryo. Sometimes some cells get left behind between the surface of the skin and the spinal cord, and these develop into dermal cysts.
Often they contain skin (sometimes hair) and can grow quite large, and they can connect to the lining of the spinal cord
You might have better luck researching the term ‘dermoid sinus’ as that’s probably the more correct term. Dermoid cyst is sometimes used to refer to a teratoma, which is quite different.
keep me in mind
I have surgery thursday morning to remove a (benign but very large) tumor in my right ovary called a teratoma/dermoid. they may need to remove the ovary, too. I’ve christened the tumor Reginald.
This is the eye of an 11 week old Mastiff puppy that had 2 haired skin masses growing on the third eyelid, conjunctiva and surface of his eye - known as a corneal dermoid. Swipe to see relative size of the dermoids after removal. Animals are born with dermoids and they result because of abnormal development in utero. If not removed corneal dermoids will cause ocular irritation, ulceration and impair vision. These dermoids were already causing ocular irritation leading to corneal scarring, and physically were causing vision impairment. CullenWebb recommends all patients with corneal dermoids be seen by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist for assessment and to provide treatment options. Removal requires surgical expertise otherwise the eye may be made blind by causing perforation if the dermoid involves the cornea. In this patient, referral was important because of the constructive surgery that was required to ensure proper eyelid function following dermoid removal, and also to ensure the tear duct was preserved. This 4 month old dachshund puppy had haired skin growing on the surface of his eye - known as a corneal dermoid. Upper and lower left images before surgical removal; upper right and lower centre immediately after removal of the dermoid; lower right size of dermoid relative to a Canadian nickel! It is anticipated that this puppy's eye will appear normal after post-surgical healing has occurred😊👍 Dermoids are something that an affected animal is born with. Dermoids result because of abnormal development in utero. If not removed corneal dermoids will cause ocular irritation, ulceration and impair vision as in the present patient. CullenWebb recommends all patients with corneal dermoids be seen by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist for assessment and to provide treatment options. Removal requires surgical expertise otherwise the eye may be made blind by causing perforation of the globe (eyeball).
