5 Tips for Finishing Your Novel
Aprilâs session of Camp NaNoWriMo is drawing to a close, and you might find yourself nearing the end of your novel. If you need some tips on writing and polishing the ending of your story, author Derek Murphy is here to share a few! Plus, you can check out the rest of our novel-finishing resources on our #NaNoFinMo page.Â
You won NaNoWriMo and have a 50k collection of scenes and sentences, but how do you clean it up and get it done? How do you make sure itâs finished, satisfying and enjoyable? Here are 5 powerful strategies for finishing your novel and some helpful writing tips that will push you past the finish line.
1. Give it a satisfying resolution.
In order to have a powerful story, your book should probably focus on a main characterâs change or transformation. Thereâs an inner war, a.k.a. the characterâs emotional healing, and an outer war: the conflict that forced the reckoning. If itâs a purely symbolic internal realization, you can mirror that with actual conflict in the real scene: the breaking of a dish, a fit of rage, a sudden ray of sunlight (or a storm⌠this should not be pleasant; Itâs a breaking point and spiritual death/rebirth).

UPDATE: I made a video talking about this stuff but it's down at the bottom of this post. Scroll down to see it.
Derek Murphy:
Iâve been self-publishing for about a decade, and have sold thousands of books.
I havenât made a living (yet), and like most self-publishing gurus and experts, I make my living in services rather than with my own books.
But after attending (and speaking at) dozens of writing conferences and publishing conventions, if there is one secret truth behind both traditional and indie publishing industries, itâs this:
Itâs all about the money.
If I were to break that down and make it more personal, I could say it this way:
Nobody cares about you or your book (and you shouldnât ask them to!)
This is important, as it reveals a bizarre rift between the creative, artistic side of writing and the productive, professional side. [...]

Looking to publish your book in 2018-2019? Start here.
I have put together an inventory of the most experienced, accurate and provenly successful creators, who are here to give you solid advice on how to publish that book this year.
Things to remember as you start devouring the following list:
Make notes
These opinions are not my own, just a few things that actually work in the sea of nonsense thatâs floating online. Remember, if someone can record themselves on camera, or hit âpublishâ on a blog post, it doesnât mean they actually know what theyâre talking about.Â
Do not take their word as gospel, but as your starting point. Hopefully, as you start making your way in the book business, youâll find your own success methods, and teach them to others. But for now, listen and learn.
I am always here, donât hesitate to ask me anything.
Good luck, you can do it!
Donât know anything about publishing? Here are a few basic things for newbies from a very sweet and very successful person.
You are advanced and have marketed your book to within an inch of its life? Then here, launch that thing into the bookiverse. Weâre all waiting for it. Here is an amazing author who is selling TONS of books (I have read a few of her books, she can create magic) and knows what sheâs doing.
You have tried doing this once before, but it completely flopped? Well, here is someone who might be able to tell you what went wrong, or what to avoid in the future. She is smart, hilarious and breaks down things in such a helpful way. I just wish all authors took a look at her videos before shooting themselves in the foot. Just saying.
And finally. Are you still working on that book? Do you need some motivation and enthusiasm to pour into those final pages, while learning by example how to marvellously get your audience excited about it (before itâs written or edited?) This writerâs book is not yet written, but sheâs promoting the heck out of it. How does she do it? Well, lower your volume, because youâre about to be hit by a ton of sunshine. This is how:
Hope you found this helpful. I have a ton more resources that helped give me ideas and/or inspiration, so hopefully Iâll make another post about this soon!
