The new steps approved by Israel’s security cabinet for the West Bank are counterproductive and incompatible with international law. They risk undermining ongoing international efforts aimed at stabilization and the advancement of peaceful efforts in the region. "Venezuela's University Professors Face Extreme Poverty"

Caracas, 12/06/24. (PS) - Former Mayor of Ciudad Bolívar and retired university professor Víctor Fuenmayor lamented the dire situation faced by educators in Venezuela, as he commented on University Professor's Day, observed on December 5. "In Venezuela, a full professor with postgraduate, doctoral, and postdoctoral degrees, who should receive the best salary, earns only $27 a month. We are the poorest university professors in Latin America," he stated during an interview on the radio program *Termómetro Social*.

According to Fuenmayor, Venezuela ranks last in the regional salary index for university professors, even below Cuba, where a full professor earns $29 per month. "At one time, we were a refuge for professors from Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru, but now we have become university professors living in extreme poverty," he remarked.

He pointed out that salaries for university staff in Venezuela range between $5 and $15 per month, depending on their rank, and criticized the use of the term "vital minimum income," which he called a euphemism used by the government to avoid recognizing the right to a dignified salary.

Fuenmayor also denounced that the budget deficit affecting universities has reached 99%, which, in his opinion, reflects a deliberate policy of suffocation: "Universities have been brought to their knees. This prevents teaching, administrative, and research activities from taking place," he said.

He further reflected on the exodus of young talent: "A young professional earns the same as a butcher's minimum wage. A country cannot grow if its youth have no opportunities."

Despite this bleak scenario, Fuenmayor called on people not to lose hope: "We must continue to strive for Venezuela’s recovery, regardless of who is in power. Universities will always be spaces for protest and critical thinking."
