#denee

okay so,,, i sorta only figured out that denee is Really Good, Actually pretty recently, like only within the past couple months, and i tend to ruminate on things for a LONG time, so i dont really have a large body of reference built up for them yet

so i have a few but definitely not a Lot

(i also want to clarify something here, i have TERRIBLE taste in music, so like,, don’t make it a habit of coming to me for recommendations because you will be disappointed. i truly don’t have a way to describe this better than i am Very Autistic about the way i listen to music, and explaining what that means would take forever so just take me at my word that i’m not really someone you want to discuss music with because my taste is incredibly generic but for really weird reasons)

so i think sam’s town by the killers is just a great foxes album in general, there’s basically a track for every fox there. then sam’s town (the song) and when you were young in particular are good denee songs

sam’s town is more from dan’s perspective because it’s a song that’s both more indignant of and more aspirational of their situation and dan is definitely an Action Girl. she’s a Nobody from Nowhere who wants to Go Somewhere and Be Somebody and that’s really what the song is about. it’s not really a relationship song the way that when you were young is, but that idea of “i know that i can make it as long as somebody takes me home every now and then” is very denee because i can see dan overworking herself and needing renee there as a mitigating force to reign her in and ground her so that she doesn’t burn out

when you were young has the more obvious religious slant to it of course that matches renee but it’s also a more,,, steady song. one about wanting peace and stability out of a relationship which i feel is what renee is looking for

and that’s... that’s LITERALLY dan and renee. dan is “trailor trash” from some nowhere town in north dakota and renee is born and raised in detroit. they’re urban poor/rural poor solidarity and i think that’s neat :)

also ‘don’t stop believing’ is a very denee sentiment as two realists trying very hard to be optimists

maybe a little quote-unquote “girly” for dan and renee but i like that it’s a solidarity between girls songs for girls from poor backgrounds who’ve had everyone give up on them. it’s very much a song that dan and renee could have related to as teenagers, and it just has big sapphic energy

dan and renee are both highly motivated individuals. they’re involved in the most things on the team, dan as the captain and renee organizing a lot of charity events, not to mention they both seem like the types to be involved in other things outside of the team. they also have some of the biggest dreams for themselves of the foxes, especially like,,, relative  to where they came from (no offense to kevin but ‘greatest exy player in history’ isn’t quite as aspirational when your mom invented the sport and you came out of the womb with a golden exy racket in hand)

but then the song is also about relaxing and taking time for yourself and spending time with your partner and fucking and that’s something both dan and renee would need to remind each other to do

and also the song bops and all the music up till now has been sad white people music so i wanted a little more variety. is it a perfect, quintessential denee song? maybe not but it’s fun and i like it
