Replaying earlier chapters now makes most nice things you can do for Ralsei seem like leading him on
Hugging him, giving him the plushie, even just the patently obvious, why-would-you-choose-the-other-option stuff like "I like that Ralsei is Ralsei", all of that could be interpreted as Kris liking him back. And I'm pretty sure Ralsei IS interpreting that way because of how desperate his affections become. If he's so caught up in his fear of losing Kris that he'll throw out his own morals to blindly trust that Kris is raising fountains for a good reason(the worst possible thing to do in this situation), he's gonna interpret anything like being given a prize won at a carnival game as "omg, I think they like me too!". Now, obviously the fix here is to just say that's not the case, but we never get the chance and us just being there stops Kris from getting one either.
Not everything is like this, fortunately. "It's ok not to smile", easily the most important thing we've ever said to him in five chapters, is hardly something that could be considered exclusively romantic. But the more I go through the earlier chapters knowing what I know now, the more it seems like being nice to this poor guy who's literally never felt a connection with another person will be setting him up for a harder and harder fall when we both have to face the reckoning of finding out just how many times we were forcing Kris to do things they didn't want and imply a connection that wasn't theirs.
Sooo I drew this BEFORE playing Chapter 5 as a spoiler-guard for my streams' chat window... had no clue how accurate it'd be lol 🌼
