Once Christianity gained power and influence, they would often deface statues, and temples. Making these historic sites not only ruined, but often not able to study what's left.
These statues are the most well known, as the hours of craftsmanship that the statues took, is scraped away, and a chisel is used to carve in a cross. Arms are broken, fingers discarded.
This is deeply saddening for me, simply due to the craft's destruction. However I cannot imagine how the original craftsmen would have reacted to their work not only being defaced, but also being disgraced and disrespected.
