Lark entered first, looking as tired as everyone else. Then two armored warriors, a dedicate and a novice, eased through the door sideways. They had made a chair of their arms and were carrying Rosethorn between them. She was soot-streaked, her hair black with sweat. Despite the irritated vigor in her voice, she had so little strength that she couldn't sit up, only lean against the novice.

It was Kirel; he looked positively harassed. “We brought her,” he told Niko. “And believe me, it wasn't easy.”

Lark: Your sharp tongue cuts.

Rosethorn and Lark’s relationship is so obviously just BARELY hidden for the sake of publisher censorship. Lark uses “love” as an endearment for Rosethorn and everyone who knows them knows exactly how much they mean to each other. Briar uses Lark as the ultimate trump card to try to convince Rosethorn to fight for life in his book. All of their interactions are so obviously couple-y.

It means a lot more to me now as an adult than it did before I had figured things out, I guess, and it’s taken me about a decade or so to come back to them for a re-read. As a kid, the more epic fantasy tone of the Tortall books called to me a lot more than the more academic fantasy of the Circle of Magic books.

As an adult, Lark/Rosethorn means everything and Daja and Frostpine’s relationship is so beautiful and seeing the four children grow and learn from each other is probably one of the best found family relationships I’ve ever seen. They get frustrated with each other and can drift from each other in later books, but you’ve never met a group of friends more ride or die for each other than these four.
