The thing is, magical girl decostructions have become such synonims with bleak, awful "child soldiers forced into the hunger games and the Iraq War" shit I just want a deconstruction that keeps up the tone and spirit of the genre, which is so fucking easy?
Like, for example, here's a Overlord (The Triumph Games Game) scenario.
A high school girl, as plain and as gloomy as possible, lives with her widower mother. Her father was, like, a cemetery warden or a undertaker or something, and her mother is this gentle florist who used to work across the street from him.
While High School Girl (from now on MC) was in early middle school, a alien race of monsters came to earth, allied with the local monster community, and waged war against creation. Your standard group of Magical Girls show up and kill the leader of the alien army after a climatic battle.
Now the world is dealing with the aftermath. The Magical Girls have disbanded, some stay active as superheroines, some as activists, some are out of the spotlight all together, and the surviving members of the alien and monster invaders are either in hiding or captured into labor camps. But it's ok since they are alien monsters right?
Anyway, back to MC. She's gloomy and goth coded because of course she is, her best friend/love interest is a happy go lucky dumbass that dresses exclusivelly in Red, she's growing up and her mother keeps trying to have a talk with her about the "changes" she might be about to experience and MC keeps shooting her down before she can start.
One night the MC, who keeps getting headaches for a while, is getting home from school and "senses" someone following her, it's a mountain wearing a trenchcoat, black eyeglasses and a hat, hiding behind the tiniest street lamp pole as soon as they realize she's seen them.
She goes onto a mad dash because that's fucking scary which brings her to a park where the stalker reaches her byt also one of the Magical Girls show up! But it's, like, the lancer one, who became effectively a Cop after the war, and was sent there to patroll because the local centre for monster controll just revealed two strong monster signals there, so her Kyubey like thingy tells her that that girl running toward her screaming (in fear) is actually one of them and needs to be captured for questioning so Magical Girl Cop attacks her with a beam of light but then the person in a trench coat jumps in front of her and protects her from the beam.
The trench coat dissolves to reveal a scaly bait ultra buffed dragon man using his body as a shield and telling her if she's alright, and that he's there to protect her, and Magical Girl Cop recognizes him as one of the Alien King 7 liutenants, the Dragon of Greed Fafnir, he blows some poison smoke out and in the kerfuffle Fafnir manages to get the MC away.
He brings her to her mothers home who apparently knows him and scolds him for showing up at all and MC is confused so we have some good old fashioned explenation time.
Her dad was actually the Alien Monster Demon King, he fell in love with her mother, a simple human florist and part time witch.
He tried to make the world a better place for monsters aliens alike, but the Magical Girls cropped up and stopped his vision, according to Fafnir.
Her mother, now confirmed as a monster fucker that pegs, then corrects him by saying that he was still a ruthless warlord and a terrorist, even if his cause was just, and she will not have her daughter take his place as Queen of the Monsters so young, even now that her powers are awakening.
MC takes on the role as Queen of the Monsters to save her people from the condition they are in. She attempts diplomacy at first but it fails so she ends up becoming Magneto instead.
Her best friend/love interest is also the former leader of the Magical Girls, now forced to get back in action for the new threat. Hate Square with 2 people shenanigans ensue.
Monsters and Demons attacks are then shown in the light of reactions rather than malicious actions, like a bear monster cubs getting stolen, or having to liberate a construction site that is using monsters as slave work, the usual gist done in a monster of the week format with some plot.
It ends with the MC efforts getting rewarded, making a society of true equality between humans and monsters, and resolving the hate square between the leader magical girl and the villainess by having them finally date after everything's said and done.
There, decostruction done, it's lighharted, there's a bit of seriousness, and no one had to be graphically decapitated on screen to have this.
