summary:
Eddie, a photographer, receives a wooden advent calendar by Abuela during the Christmas season. He meets Ana shortly after and Buck, his long time best friend, comes back around the same time. Eddie thinks that the figures the calendar gives him lead to Ana, but do they? Eddie will find out.

prompt one: siblings teaming up with each other instead of their partners
the original prompt said three sentences but it was very hard to make this work given the nature of the fic so...here's...way more than three sentences...
(we're pretending that Eddie is in fact a middle child and Adriana's closer to him in age than she probably is because the diaz sibling dynamic confuses me okay)
no excuses writing meme - siblings team up (team up in perhaps the loosest sense of the phrase) set sometime after 5a
Adriana makes Eddie wait outside her house a full fifteen minutes before she finally makes her way out to his car. Sheâs doing him a favor, technically, so heâs trying really hard not to be annoyed with her before the night even beginsâbut fifteen minutes?
âI told you I was on my way over an hour ago, Adri,â He points out anyways, once she's finally in the car, because he is petty and he had texted her and she still made him wait fifteen minutes. He really only has so much patience and he doesnât really want to be doing any of this with her anyways butâ
âI was helping Isabella with her homework, Edmundo,â Adriana bites back, her mouth curling around his name in a way that reminds him way too much of their motherâand Ana. Unfortunately.
âHow does Isabella have homework already? Sheâs a baby,â Eddie says, backing away from the obvious challenge. They have to spend a minimum of two hours with each other starting now. Itâs in both of their best interest if they put off fighting for later.
âSheâs seven, Eddie.â
He winces and focuses on pulling out of Adrianaâs weirdly complicated neighborhood instead of replying. Itâs going to take them 30 minutes to get to Christopherâs school, which is going to make them 10 minutes late for the parent-teacher conference, which isnât the biggest deal but Eddieâs trying to make a good impression.
Itâs been a hard year for him and for Christopher and somehow everyone at his school is intimately aware of that. Heâs just trying to avoid the pitying looks he gets from teachers and parents alike. Theyâre the exact kind of looks everyone gave him after Shannon died and he doesnât really need that right nowânobodyâs died. Eddieâs justâŚgoing through some life changes.
âWhy am I going with you to this parent-teacher conference anyways?â Adriana asks, sounding at least 15 years younger than she actually is.
âDonât you want to know how your nephewâs doing in school?â Eddie deflects. He sees Adriana raise an eyebrow out of the corner of his eye, but keeps his eyes fixed on the road.
âDonât you have an aid that normally does this kind of thing with you?â
âCarla,â Eddie corrects, fingers flexing around the steering wheel. âHer name is Carla. And sheâs busy tonight.â
He wants her, more than anything, to drop it there. Heâs not ashamed to admit that Adriana was literally his last and only optionâbut it does sting a little bit that heâs had to resort to this. And heâs not really trying to get into it right now. Unfortunately, Adriana is his sister and sisters have such a knack forâ
âDonât you normally drag Buck with you to everything?â
âI donât drag him anywhere,â Eddie mutters, a little too defensive. He pulls up to a red light and runs a hand through his hair. Heâs pretty sure he put too much gel in it tonight and it feels weird and sticky between his fingers. âBut, uh, heâs busy too.â
Itâs notâa lie, exactly. But Eddie never actually asked him. He just figuredâŚsafe enough to assume.
âYouâre still not talking, huh?â Adriana digs, always too wise and knowing than will ever be good for either one of them.
âWe talk,â Eddie says. Except they havenât really. The last time they talked was three weeks ago when Buck sent Eddie a picture of Jee-Yun with mashed sweet potato all over her face and Eddie had replied I see the resemblance now.
Heâs not going to admit to the number of times heâs opened their text thread just to see the red heart Buck had put next to that message in lieu of a response. Heâs not going to admit that he stares at it longingly for several more minutes than is strictly appropriate for best friends turned ex-coworkers turnedâŚwhatever they are now, mentally willing Buck to say literally anything else instead of texting or calling him himself, like a proper, well-functioning adult.
Heâs certainly not going to admit any of this to his sister, who he braved afternoon traffic for just so that he wouldnât have to go to the parent-teacher conference alone and field questions like so no Buck today? or Christopherâs been handling the divorce surprisingly well, how do you make it work?âthat was something one of the PTA moms had actually said to his face during their last meeting. It took an embarrassingly long amount of time for Eddie to work out how to explain that he and Shannon werenât divorcedâsheâs deadâbefore the woman had clarified that she was talking about Buck.
Eddie hadnât known how to respond to that.
Hence, his baby sister in his passenger seat because she, while exceptionally good at getting under Eddieâs skin and pestering the shit out of him, is also exceptionally good at making everything about her and stealing the hearts of anyone and everyone whoâs ever been near her.
This is a masterful plan, actually, and Eddieâs actually very smart and competent for coming up with it.
âI canât believe you did this again, Eddie,â Adriana says, leaning back against the door and rolling her eyes like talking to Eddie is some burdensome task that sheâs legally obligated to do. And Eddie should, after 30 years of knowing Adriana, know better than to rise to the bait.
Against his better judgment, he asks anyways, âWhat exactly did I do again?â
âYou sabotaged another relationship because youâre allergic to talking about anything that matters.â
Eddieâs hands tighten on the steering wheel again. He glances at his phone. Theyâre only 5 minutes out from the school. They can totally make it there without arguing.
âYou did it with mom and dad, you did it with Shannon, hell, you probably did it with Ana, and now youâre doing it with Buck tooââ
âOkay, first of all, I donât think we can blame my relationship with mom and dad solely on me, okay, they started this shit. Second, none of those relationships are the same thing. Buck and I are notâweâre notâweâre just friends. Friends have rough patches.â
âFriends have rough patches,â Adriana fires back at him and Eddie braces himself in his seat for whatâs about to follow. âEdmundo, you got shot in front of him less than a year ago. Have you ever talked to him about that?â
âWeâve talked,â Eddie defends again, but his voice sounds small even to himself.
âPepa told me that he was covered in your blood. She said that Ana sat by your side in the hospital for days while Buck slept on your couch and took care of Christopher, made sure he ate and got to school on time, and went to bed every nightâyouâre trying to tell me those relationships are different? Maybe they are, but definitely not in the way that you think.â
Eddie shrinks down in his seat as he pulls into the school parking lot, though at this point heâs genuinely considering turning the car around and taking Adriana back home immediately. Heâs not really sure where all of the anger is coming from, but heâs also not entirely sure that he doesnât deserve it.
âGod, Eddie, I wish you would just man up for once.â
âOkay,â Eddie reels back in his seat, feeling like heâs been slapped. âNow, you just sound like dad.â
âAt least dad would actually tell us if he got shot and we wouldnât have to hear about it five days later from Pepa.â
Okay. Okay.
Eddie doesnât think thatâs necessarily true, but he gets the point.
He pulls into a parking spot, letting his hands rest on the steering wheel for a moment while he closes his eyes and takes a few deep breaths, attempting to collect himself, before he shuts off the engine.
âAdri, I was in the hospital,â He tries, voice wavering no matter how hard he tries to keep it level. He looks over at her in the passenger seat and sees her with her arms folded over her chest, body propped up against the door like she canât get far enough away from him, her jaw hard, eyes staring out at the rows of cars around them.
Even though she reminds him more and more of their mom every day, Eddie still looks at her and sees the kid he grew up with, too fierce and passionate and stubborn to be matched by either one of their parentsâor him.
âShe told us days after you had woken up, Eddie,â She says. The slight dip in her voice when she says his name is the only thing that betrays her hurt. âYou were already home by the time we found outâyou had a fucking welcome home party before we ever found out.â
And thatâsâthatâs still not necessarily on Eddie. He remembers Buck explaining at some point during the party, when he and Eddie caught a moment alone in the kitchen, that he and Pepa had discussed telling the rest of his family, had considered inviting at least Adriana to the party since she was the closest, but figured it might be too much pressure to put on Eddie so they justâhadnât.
And Eddie, as much as he understands how that hurts Adriana, was honestly grateful that they had made that decision.
Because as much as Eddie does and always will love his family, his parents areâŚa lot. And Adriana, being the youngest, will always be the favorite. Whatever she knows, everyone will know, and whatever she does, everyone will want to do too.
If Adriana had been there, his parents wouldâve been there, and if his parents had been there, there wouldâve been a whole discussion about Christopher and his well-being and his safety and whether or not Eddie was ever fit to be a parentâthe answer to which will always be no, according to his parents.
âAdriana,â Eddie begins, running a hand over his face and shifting more in his seat to face her. âLook, Iâm sorry I didnât tell you myself. And Iâm sorry I didnât let you know sooner. ButâŚIâm the one who got shot, okay? ThatâŚthatâs about me. Itâs myâŚtrauma, not anyone elseâs.â
Adriana looks at him, her eyes red-rimmed and watery, her mouth doing that thing that Eddie recognizes as his own quirk, her lips pursed and wobbly as she tries not to cry. He wants to reach out and comfort her, take her hand in his and fix all of this, but these wounds run deep and heâs not sure any of it can ever really be fixed.
Heâs been trying really hard to be okay with that these days.
âIsnât it,â Adriana starts, taking a shaky breath and tossing her hair over her shoulder, regaining some composure. âIsnât it also about the people who love you, Eddie?â
Eddie blinks at her before looking away, worrying his bottom lip.
This is something that Frank has said to him, in different words, a few different times over their sessions together. Heâs not sure it really clicked until now.
âLook,â Adriana says, her voice louder and more confident now. Eddie watches her run a hand through her hair before she fixes him with a look thatâs fire and water all at once. It feels a little like home. âIâm mad at you for not telling me. And Iâm mad at you for almost dying. And if you ever get shot again, I swear, Iâm going to kill you myselfâbut I love you, Eddie. Thatâs why it hurts. And I knowâŚas much as you want to ignore itâŚyou love Buck, too. And he, for some ungodly reason, loves you too. And I know you. I know what you do when you love people and youâre scared. You push them away. You deserve more than that, Eddie.â
Eddie stares at her and is painfully aware of the fact that heâs crying now in the car in the parking lot of his sonâs school with his younger sister in the passenger seat, and this is not going to do anything to assuage the worries and fears of all the other parents and faculty, but he doesnât really care about any of that right now.
âWho the fuck let you get so smart in your old age?â Eddie says, instead of Iâm sorry I scared you, Iâve been scared too, thank you for seeing me, I promise Iâm trying, wiping roughly at his eyes.
âFuck you, also could you pass that message along to Sophia? Because I swear she still treats me like Iâm twelve sometimes.â
âThatâs because you still act like youâre twelve sometimes.â
âShut up,â Adriana huffs, reaching over the console to slug Eddieâs arm. âI was trying to be sentimental until you ruined it.â
âIâm sorry,â Eddie laughs, rubbing his arm. âLook, you werenât my first choice for this, Iâll admit that. But Iâm glad youâre here. What do you say we go inside, totally pretend neither one of us has been crying, then go get ice cream after?â
Adriana studies him for a moment, eyes narrow like thereâs more she wants to say, but the corner of her lip twitches up anyways.
âJust so weâre clear, youâre the one thatâs crying. But Iâll take you up on the ice cream.â
NEXT: the next line. meaning i will finish the sentence Iâm on and write a new one, which youâll get
okay so clearly this is more than one line but
âSoâtogether?â Buck asks.
âYou want me to carry you over the threshold or something?â Heâs teasing, but something in Buckâs expression softens.
âSave that for the wedding.â Buck holds out his hand and Eddie takes it, threading their fingers together.
âGetting married, are we?â he asks, and warmth settles in his chest as the thought brings with it no fear, no panic, just quiet certainty and excitement at the future stretching out in front of him.
âSomeday, yeah,â Buck grins, squeezing his hand. âDonât think youâre getting rid of me that easily.â
Eddie pushes the door open with his free hand and steps inside, turning to tug Buck inside with him. âNever,â he promises.
wait ok you mentioned band of brothers in that other ask and honestly I've heard richard speight talk about filming that and I never put two and two together that that show is the same show hes been talking about until literally reading that ask help my brain hurts
omg richard speight IS in band of brothers!!!! here he iiiiis
he plays skip muck!! he's more of a background character, doesn't have an episode focused on him, but is still integral and very funny and loveable (like pretty much every chara on the show hehe). i watched band of brothers after spn and was defo like omg!!!!!!!!!!!!! and there's a lot of moments like that when you watch the show, like i said so many cameos and now-famous actors :)
anyway!! like. i cannot recommend band of brothers ENOUGH to watch, it's only 10 one hour eps!!!!!!!! but i do genuinely understand if it's not everybody's thing...... couldn't be me tho

so i'm imagining this a la the halloween heists from brooklyn nine nine, specifically the one where jake and amy get engaged!
"buck! how could you?" eddie exclaimed, mouth hanging open
"sorry, eds." buck grinned, handing the engraved belt over to maddie, reaching out to high five her before turning back to his boyfriend, wiggling his brows. "all's fair in love and war!"
"you're sleeping on the couch tonight."
"oh shut up, you love me."
send me a pairing and an au/setting and i'll write a three sentence fic!
