reclaiming "we have literally forever to figure it out" for the dbda fandom as a community call to keep us engaged in spite of everything. we're too young and fresh to die
charles rowland & edwin payne, the red and blue duo of your dreams
there’s a word in Greek, φίλτατος (philtatos), which roughly translates to “most dearly beloved”.
however this does not do it justice. someone’s philtatos is their highest confidant and closest friend, no one’s opinion or thoughts are held in a higher regard than theirs. they can read you like a book, they know you that well, yet hold space for you always and in every way possible.
you are the most dear and loved thing to them in the entire world. nothing, not even death, can stop the love that they have for you. all of that is the meaning of the word, and even that doesn’t capture the breadth, depth, and intricacies of it.
to put it another way: your philtatos is someone you’d go to hell and back for, or someone who’d go to hell and back for you. this is a post about Edwin and Charles
I love fandom. You can ask a hyper-specific question about an obscure detail in some book or show and a bunch of people will fall over themselves trying to answer it. You can ask on Tumblr “What London museum is in the opening sequence of the first Dead Boy Detectives episode?” and within an hour four different people will answer, and one of them will provide maps and screenshots and explanations.
No question is too obscure. No question is stupid. People ask because they genuinely want to know and people answer because they genuinely want to share information. And enthusiasm. Fans are very enthusiastic about our special interests, and in our spaces, no one is shamed for that. Expertise is a point of pride. Passion means we care.
And fans know so much about so many things, it’s honestly mind-blowing. In her afterward to her story “Death on the Nile”, Connie Willis talked about a movie she watched as a kid, “but I had no idea what it was called or who was in it, so I had no chance of finding it again until I had the bright idea of asking at a science fiction convention. (Science fiction fans know everything.)” (The Best of Connie Willis page 74). And she’s absolutely right about that. The fandom community is an amazing place full of incredible, helpful, kind people, and it’s such a joy to be a part of that world.
And the Dead Boy Detectives fandom is one of the best parts of that universe.

I'm remembering how shattered and heartbroken I felt last year when I read the cancellation news late in the evening. I was standing in the kitchen and just cried until my flatmate came in and gave me a hug and I cried some more. I've never felt such genuine grief at losing a tv show, but dbd had come to mean so much to me and had been such a safe and happy place that to hear that it would not continue felt like the end of everything.
today, I still feel angry at netflix for this decision. I still feel angry on behalf of the cast and the crew who have poured so much love and time and passion into this show. but I also feel so grateful for the fandom that has grown around this story, for the beautiful art people have created, the projects we have come together for, the fics that have been written, the merch and the meet ups. I feel grateful for the support and love I can feel from everyone in this fandom daily, and more than anything I need you all to know how wonderful you are, how much I appreciate interacting with you all and sharing this space with you every day.
but above all, today, one year after the cancellation, I feel more determined than ever to fight for this show that has touched so many people and moved so many of us so deeply. Edwin and Charles felt like their deaths didn't matter because no one ever solved them and people just moved on, forgot that they ever existed. And it is because of that that their cases matter so much to them. They have to matter. And in the same way, I feel like we have it within us to make sure the world knows how much their story matters. That it matters to tell stories about connection and queerness, about the broken, the beaten and the damned.
I know this fandom will carry on, that it will continue to be a safe space for those who need one, and that Edwin and Charles and Crystal and Niko will stay with us and help us deal with the world when things get rough. And somewhere along the way, I know we can find a new home for our show, a way for the story to continue.
I'm probably the last person to notice this but there's this one scene in the dead boy detectives intro that is a HUGE nod to payneland and now im losing my mind for not realizing it sooner.
THE CHAIN??!? THE SHOES?!??! AND THE BOWTIE ON THE OTHER ONE?!?! I never noticed the accessories before and while I did think the skeletons were a nod to the boys, I didn't think there was such direct confirmation. Plus I know it's exaggerated because of the animation style but that pose and the way the Edwin skeleton is holding the Charles' skeleton is so romantic!! And it could be argued that its because Edwin is in love with Charles and thats why he caught him so tenderly and Charles is laughing and falling and oblivious to how Edwin feels, but the way Charles' skeleton is looking at Edwin's is just as romantic if not more romantic than anything Edwin is doing!! I might be reading too much into this but I genuinely can't read this as platonic "mates having a good laugh", ESPECIALLY with Edwin's hand landing on Charles chest and the way Charles' head falls on his shoulder (keep in mind, while edwin and Charles do have a lot of physical affection throughout the show and are obviously comfortable with each other it is NEVER like that, except maybe for a couple of their hugs where charles nuzzles his head into edwin, and even then that is literally not very platonic on his part)
Little details like these make me miss this show SO MUCH😭 Hopefully we'll get some closure when Charles (and presumably Edwin since they rarely are without each other and it would be weird to have JUST Charles) appears in the Sandman season 2
