“What?” He thought they were doing brilliant. Sure, it was a bit shaky what with Crystal pulling away again and again, but she always came back, didn’t she, and Charles is aces at being patient. Sometimes. Crystal certainly seemed okay with their situation whenever she dragged him into her bed and twisted her fingers into his hair. “I told you, I don’t mind waiting. You’ve got more than enough going on, yeah? I’m not going anywhere.” 

Crystal throws her hands up, journal slipping to the floor. “That’s—” Her voice cracks, but she raises it nonetheless. “That’s the fucking problem, Charles!”

Charles closes the distance, but freezes when he sees Crystal stiffen up. “I hear you, but that doesn’t help. You didn’t do anything wrong.” Sure, her and Edwin got into another tiff yesterday but they’ve learned to make it work for them. He’s not sure what could have brought this on. 

Crystal’s face crumbles before she visibly tries to put herself back together. “You- it’s this whole fucking mess.” Crystal gestures to the space between them and Charles feels something sour settle in the stomach Edwin insists he doesn’t have anymore.
