David Lucas after John Constable, Summer morning (mezzotint, c. 1830)
In 1827, Constable began work on the project that would occupy his attention until his death seven years later: the publication of a series of prints based on his paintings that would stand as a summary of his achievements. The painter collaborated closely with the engraver David Lucas to create prints that would convey Constable's didactic intention—to illustrate the 'chiaroscuro of nature'. The medium of mezzotint, in which the design is developed from dark to light using a wide range of velvety tones, was eminently suited to the project. Here, the bright sun of a summer morning illuminates a richly textured landscape, striated in light and shade.

#FM26 #WonderkidFactory: The Ultimate Wonderkid Factory Challenge: Bem-vindo ao Brasil. A brand new #FootballManager challenge takes us to the northeast of Brazil for a youth-based challenge with @Retrofcbrasil. Read here:
Look at the lower center of this print. Not the sail, not the sky - the fallen tree, sprawled along the bank where it meets the River Stour, its dead limbs reaching into the water. Most people glance at this mezzotint and see the drama everyone's meant to see: that violent crack of light tearing through the clouds on the right, the silver water catching it like a mirror. David Lucas spent months scraping that light out of darkness - working the copper plate for John Constable's "English Landscape Scenery" series, a project Constable launched to bring his paintings to a wider audience through print. But Constable, who designed the composition, put that dead tree there on purpose. It's the counterweight to all that celestial theatre. Decay at the water's edge. A tree that once stood where the living ones still stand on the opposite bank. Constable drove Lucas half-mad with revisions. He wanted every proof darker, then lighter, then darker again. But that fallen tree never moved. It was the anchor. Without it, "River Stour, Suffolk" becomes a pretty skyscape. With it, you feel the river's age, its indifference. The light will pass. The dead wood remains. Quelle: meisterdrucke.com
