So I'm kin with the Dark Lord/ex-Dark Lord from Miitopia. Gotta say, the guilt is still pretty crushing even a world and a lifetime away. (If you haven't beaten the game, don't read the rest of this confession. It has heavy endgame spoilers in it.)
All I wanted was to be someone, and I ended up with, well... anyone who's played the game knows. And yet, despite that, there's a small part of it that I don't regret. Before I became the Dark Lord, I was trapped in life, doing nothing but mass-producing HP bananas. Once I was defeated, I didn't have to go back to that dead-end job. I could be free.
For about fifteen minutes before the Darker Lord (great job on the new name /s) stole my face and put it on a monster, just like I had done to so many people as the Dark Lord. And then the heroes defeated me again, and for some unfathomable reason they forgave me.
Like sure, technically the Dark Curse had been the pilot, but being possessed isn't as simple as that. There's a reason his name changed when he possessed the Great Sage. Despite the existence of dominant and watcher entities, the Dark Curse melds with the person it's possessing. Every face I stole was taken by my own hand, and I can remember the sensation of the magic clearly even now.
And they forgave me. They let me help them on their path to defeat the Darker Lord. I hadn't officially changed jobs or anything, so I was still able to produce HP bananas even if I wasn't the best in combat. (Yeah, all jobs had little abilities like that. Most of them weren't as nice as the player jobs, though. Basically the only things I could do were keep HP bananas fresh and carry as many as I wanted in hidden pockets in my clothes.)
I still can't understand why they forgave me. I still haven't forgiven myself. If I'd been stronger, I could have prevented so much suffering.
