So the film starts, uhh, picks up in some ways off the heels of Ragnarok uhh and you kind of come in mid-battle was that always the…the opening? Was that scene always intended to be…
Uhh I think we went through many iterations of the script.  There were a lot of different drafts the story played out a lot of different ways because there is no template for it nobody’s ever taken this many preexisting franchises and tried to combine them into one film so we couldn’t really look at anything as a template for it. It was a real discovery process over the course of a year and a half. I think this scene in particular. ..This scene came about when the movie started to commit to Thanos as the central character of the movie. And the notion that we wanted a smash and grab film. Which was a movie that starts, at go, and doesn’t stop until you get off at the end. Right, and it also sets up for the audience that anyone is at risk here. …that the stakes were real and that the movie was going to go to a tonally complicated place and you know we do that from jump street. Thanos dispatches like the reigning villain of the Marvel universe within five minutes of the opening of the film. And not to mention, the very key is that..that fight between him and hulk sets up like…our greatest warrior is just pulverised. Thanos is a, is the Genghis Khan of this universe. Uhh hulk fights through rage, and uh, its a messy process when the Hulk fights. Thanos is precise and incredibly well-trained. And, unbeatable one-on-one on the battlefield. So we wanted to illustrate to the audience by dismantling graphically and violently that the Avengers one-on-one alone do not have a chance against him.
/Lets talk a little about some of the people we lose in this first scene. Its all very carefully considered discussion. And so Heimdall, uhm is that who Thor was referring to later on when he talks about his Best Friend/

/So umm, was Heimdall, in particular Loki, who, you know, obviously a fan favourite…we’ve lost a couple times already. Umm/
No resurrections this time
/That was clearly a line that was very important to deliver and say this time, “this is it”./
Yeap.
/So. Out of interest. How did Tom take that news? Was that…/
I mean I think its distressing to anyone who’s been working on something for the better part of a decade but I think everyone also understands that you can’t keep playing these characters forever. We’re not…comic books you can keep redrawing characters at, you know the same age for a decade.  Right? We’re all aging. And there are new ideas and stories to tell. Look at the incredible success of Black Panther there is a new direction that the Marvel universe needs to go on that speaks to where society is today and how audiences react to storytelling that was not the same as it was a decade ago. And I think they can make much more interesting choices moving forward, when we close the final page of this book.
/Were those two particular deaths you talked about like, you know Thanos is your protagonist but Thor almost is. You’ve talked about how he goes on his heroes journey up to a point I think he almost is going to fulfil that…and you really strip him of everything at the start of all this. And that seems to be what is the purpose of that in some ways./
Oh yea with Thor…we love…we entered the Marvel Cinematic universe with Winter Soldier, there was one thing we loved about working with that character of Captain was the fact that he had, everything taken away from him. He’s a man out of time. He’d lost all his loved ones. His government that he used to serve had changed. He didn’t have anything to rely on. Its a great way to get at a very human dimension of the character. And Thor, what excited us at the end of Ragnarok was the fact that Thor was entering a very similar phase with the destruction of Asgard. And so we wanted to keep pushing that forward, and take everything from this guy, and figure out whats left on a humanity level when it happens to a character. And then watch him make his way back from that moment. And I think thats part of the rousing part of Thor’s journey in this movie, is that he incrementally works his way back, to try to right what has been wronged. And its the misdirection, you also want to believe that this character deserves this. He deserves to win the movie. And had he gone for the head he might have……..
