She'd always had a weakness for strays. Bleeding heart, her grandmother, Aoi, would say fondly, and it was complimentary and damning all at once. It wasn't as if she were defenseless. Work earned her a shell hard-won through sleepless depositions and mundane cruelties. But hardening completely seemed antithetical to her purpose. Which was why she was here now: on the court building’s roof, crying her eyes out.
