For so long I thought he was just a uniquely colored, very big, ferret. Then I recently saw a drawing of a red panda on Tumblr and it clicked. It had all the same details as I see in him and it just feels *right*.

I've been thinking about the idea of settling parties for daemons. Different cultures I'm sure would have different ways of celebrating someone's deamon settling, but what I've been picturing specifically is something similar to an animal themed birthday party, for lack of a better comparison
Like, a few weeks after you settle (timeline dependent on how long your family takes to organize a party) you have a get together with your loved ones with food and cake, and it's an opportunity to learn about your deamon's new form. If your daemon settled as an easily identifiable species, like a cheetah, people look up cool cheetah facts to tell you. If your form is less obvious, it can become a game, like 'lets figure out which of these five species of small gray finches you are'
Historical daemon fact I just made up! Feel free to accept or disregard at your leisure:
Prior to the information age, knowing your daemon's settled form with certainty was partly a matter of privilege. If you were rich you could afford books on animals from all over the world to try and figure out your form, and if you were REALLY rich you could have a menagerie and reference animals from that. (picture kings and emperors keeping menageries of animals with their daemon's form as a show of wealth and power)
But if you were a normal person for most of history it was the luck of the draw. Say you're a medieval peasant some time in the middle ages. Sure maybe Bathildis up the street from you got lucky settled as a horse. But your daemon settled as a human sized rabbit with a deer head and a long tail and you just kinda have to live with that
A pet peeve of mine in daemon AUs/daemon fiction:
When all the good people have mammal and bird daemons, and all the bad people have snake and bug daemons. For a while I was seeing a lot of main antagonists with snake daemons that seemed to be just because "snakes are creepy"
Like, people are gonna write whatever daemons they want and I'm not the arbiter of who can or can't have a snake daemon, but if you give a good, likeable character a snake daemon I'm probably gonna like your story for that alone
