Self reflection about how our parents parented us is a key to figuring out what may be going wrong when our children make our lives difficult. We learned our parenting skills from our parents. Whether it was good or bad doesn’t matter because what may have worked for them may not work for us or our children. A teenager acting out could be because a parent is trying to fit them into a box that crawled out of when they were their age. Ever have a time when you catch yourself sounding like your parents? Scary shit right? We have to become more aware that the way we’re parented May have not been necessarily the right way...I mean they did the best they could and we should learn from them and do better with our own children. When you have a challenge with your teen. Ask yourself. Am I bringing the past of my own childhood into the present? Is this effecting my relationship with my child and am I not seeing who they truly are because of the filters I have been programmed with. If your teen is in the midst of a rebellion then you may not want to go with this question. Always answer the question yourself before asking them. Hey “ I bought a homeless man a dinner during my lunch hour”. It felt really good to help another human being out in this life. See if they give you any response. As parents do we think we can control who are children hang around with? Most parents undertake this battle knowing that they really have no control over who their son and daughter hang around with. When teenagers seek out that teenage tribe of bad influences it typically is because they have lost their connection to us as parents. They are looking for a place to fit in, be accepted and be seen and heard. That is what their teen tribe does for them and the only sacrifice they need to make is their identity and true self. They see that as a small price to pay when they can’t connect with parents. Unfortunately, with this teen tribe they have to behave like one another or suffer the consequences of being cast out of the tribe. That means that if the group does drugs, they so drugs, hate their parents then they must hate their parents, fail school and they must fail school. Going on and on. So what is a parent to do? Ask themselves better questions. Instead of why is my child hanging around with those losers? What can I do to welcome welcome my child back into my parenting sphere of influence? What am I not giving to my child that they are going outside the family to find? What is going on in my own world that could be effecting them that may be pushing them to this bad crowd? Only when we start questioning ourselves is when we can start figuring out the behavior of our teenagers. If we are too Ignorant to accept the fact that it may be us then we have truly failed our children and ourselves.
