It’s really interesting how, even after Mairon had truly lost everything, his final act was still driven by hate, as he made one last attempt to strike at his enemies, even though it was completely futile.
Curumo’s spirit, on the other hand, tried to return to Valinor, perhaps as an attempt at seeking forgiveness, even if it was already far too late.
Of course, Manwe was not eager to accept him. It seems he is not as kind and compassionate as Frodo, who, even after everything Saruman did in the Shire, said: "He is fallen, and his cure is beyond us; but I would still spare him, in the hope that he may find it"
Curumo remained such a funny gremlin even when he was already at rock bottom and two steps away from total ruin. Love him for that.
I’ve finally settled on a headcanon for why Curumo didn’t join Melkor, even though he was so similar to Mairon and probably felt the urge to leave the Valar long before the Third Age.
He was already tired and frustrated from constantly competing with Mairon under Aule and, more often than not, losing to him. So when another Maia left, the last thing Curumo would do was follow him, only to continue that same pointless, exhausting rivalry.
And it would’ve been even worse! Much worse. At least Aule was fair, judging his Maiar according to their talents and skills. But knowing how much Melkor favored Mairon, Curumo would’ve understood from the start that joining him would turn his life into a nightmare: constantly pushed beyond his limits, yet likely never truly acknowledged for it.
No, no, and no again, he refused to accept any of it.
I’ve been thinking about AU with Curumo as Annatar in Eregion (after seeing @saintvoids talk about it here), and now after rereading this part of the book, I like the idea even more!
Curumo would be such a good seducer! Aragorn suggests that he was still very dangerous even after his defeat by the Ents, when everyone already knew he was an enemy and a traitor, and that there were only about three person in all of Middle-earth who could defy him one-on-one (Gandalf, Elrond and Galadriel, so all of them were Ring-bearers, btw). Imagine how much influence he could have gained among the elves and men in the Second Age, with the power of his voice and a young, beautiful appearance.
He would have been unstoppable, and even Galadriel wouldn’t have had a reason to distrust him, because it would have been completely true that he was Aule’s Maia and an emissary of the Valar.
Also, the best part is that it wouldn’t even matter whether Mairon returned to Valinor or not, Middle-earth would still be doomed to be screwed over by one of Aule’s Maiar, hehe.

Curumo really out here proving he’s just Mairon’s little sibling!
Saruman’s plan was either to find the Ring and take Sauron’s place (preferably), or at least to be his ally, which would grant him a favorable position when Sauron won (or so he believed). But at the start of The Two Towers, literally every single character already knows he’s a double traitor. Sauron knows it, the Nazgul know it, ordinary orcs know it, and even their enemies have realized it. He drove himself into a corner through his own actions, where there were no friends or allies left.
What’s interesting is that this also means he didn’t even consider returning to Valinor. Which he could have done, even if Sauron had regained the Ring and won the war, and the mission of the Istari had failed. His belief that Mordor’s strength was too great to be defeated wasn’t the reason he sided with the Enemy. He, Gandalf, and the rest of the Maiar could still have sailed to Valinor, but he was so enamored with the desire to rule, and so blinded by his pride, that it was no longer a preferable option for him.
‘Yes, I am white now,’ said Gandalf. ‘Indeed I am Saruman, one might almost say—Saruman as he should have been.’
This is certainly… an interesting way of coping with a breakup with your toxic ex.
